Question Pet Food Concerns

For what it's worth, you might want to check out

if you have any concerns about pet food companies that use animals for questionable testing and research.

I'm not certain how conclusive this information is, but it certainly, at the least, gives food for thought...that was NOT an intentional pun!

I'm just a little concerned about names that are NOT on the list.

What do you guys think?

There are some books you can read regarding the pet food industry that were written by a few advocates, I don't believe she is affiliated with PETA, but you never know? You can check out the first two books on this list, by Ann Martin:

Crap I hit 'enter' before I was finished! lol

Anyhow, yes..there are alot of disgusting/repulsive accusations against many pet food companies, Iams is pretty bad. I think PETA tends to 'dramatize' and/or exaggerate, so the truth may be somewhere in the middle, although..I seriously doubt they are innocent. I, personally, wouldn't feed Iams, but there are only a handful of companies I'm comfortable with...but Gucci eats homecooked 95% of the time. I just like knowing what she is eating and controlling the quality of food that she consumes. Maybe that makes me crazy? or a control freak? IDK.

If you really want some good commercial food info, you should check out the February 2008 issue of the Whole Dog Journal. It just became available and it has a lot of information about the good foods, and even their sources. The no-grain foods have gotten so big that they are doing a completely seperate article on those next month. You can subscribe to the Whole Dog Journal for $20/year or you can pay a one-time price of $10 just to get the article off their web site. Since it is copyrighted, we can't copy it here, but it looks like a great article.

Here is a listing of the criteria from last year:
WDJ Dry Dog Food Selection Criteria:

1.) We look for foods that contain a lot of high-quality animal proteins
2.) We reject any food containing meat by-products or poultry by-products
3.) We reject foods containg fat or protein not identified by species
4.) We look for the use of whole grains & vegetables
5.) We eliminate all foods with artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives
6.) We eliminate all foods with added sweetners

Further Attributes:

1.) A date-code or production code is easy to find, read, and interpret
2.) More than just the required nuturients (fat, protein, fiber, moisture) listed on a product
label's "guaranteed analysis" (GA)
3.) The caloric content of the food listed on the label
4.) All of the food maker's contact information listed on its product labels (and their
product literature & Web sites)
5.) A statement that a food (or one of its close "family members") has passed an AAFCO feeding
6.) Certified Organic Ingredients
7.) Admire those manufacturers that have pursued and obtained noncompulsory manufacturing
Due to the recalls of 2007, they also asked for information about the source of the foods and where the foods were made. My understanding is that anyone who didn't give out that information is not on the recommended list for 2008. (If someone has the article, they can confirm that information. I don't have it with me.)
