Help, puppy food not working.

We switched Tasha to wellness just for puppy from the diamond puppy food the breeder was feeding. She has developed diarrhea that's lasted about 6 days now and isn't getting better. We don't know whether to go back to the diamond or try something else. Our last 2 dogs did well with Iams but I'd rather not get that. The local store has wellness simple solutions but I don't know if that's ok to feed a puppy. She's 5 months old and still a little under 6 lbs. We fed her some rice today and she liked it so I thought a rice/duck food like the wellness might work. Any advice appreciated because this is getting frustrating.

I'd try RAW...

Tasha's size reminds me of Beamer. He was 6lbs at 6 months. Then I started feeding him raw and he is now over 9lbs at 10months.

I had a puppy with this problem and this is what I did-

Took stool sample and puppy to vet to eliminate other problems
Vet gave us Metroz- works wonders to stop diarreaha....I keep it on hand now, just incase.

look at the ingredients in the dog food that gave her the diarreaha and try to fix out what might be causing the problem

feed rice and beef and lots of water until good poop

then slowly introduce food that you think will not upset puppy

Missy now eats Solid Gold tripe (wet) with extra protein like hamburger and solid gold puppy kibbles and 1 tbs on yogart (activa) daily.

She had a problem with corn, wheat and chicken. We just don't feed her any of these. Seems like all the dogs are sensitive to different things.

Hope this helps you.

Ryan, Are you referring to commercial dry dog food or home cooked type meals? Our pet store has a decent selection but not as much as might be in a bigger city. I just don't know if we have to keep her on a puppy food or not which is why I'm not sure about the wellness simple solutions. Our last 2 dogs had solid stools feeding iams but don't know if I want to use that.

We just had a stool sample checked and it was negative. There are so many ingredients in wellness puppy food it's hard to know what might be the problem. I will call the vet tomorrow for advice and meds if needed. Thanks.

Like Lynn said above..Seems like all the dogs are sensitive to different things.

I agree. What is the main ingredient(s) in the food she is getting diarrhea from? Has she had those foods before in the other kibbles? There are So many things that could cause diarrhea/sensitivities..it is really trial and error to find what agrees with each dog.

Usually, the vets tell you to feed a plain diet of homecooked boiled chicken and rice or beef and rice for a few days to clear it up, but that doesnt' always work.

I've had good luck with Fromms' dry food and Wellness Core. I took her off puppy food pretty young and used adult and she's grown just fine. My vet told me that puppy food is just higher in calories but basically the same and not really 'imperative', I think that was his word, but each dog is different in their needs..

Hi again,

I'm talking about commercial raw dog food. This is the primary brand my Beamer eats: http://naturesvariety.com/content.la...7303PYH434A68B

He also eats some Healty Paws and tolledan Farms (canadian brands) for raw meats bones, tripe and stuff..

Dogs of all life stages can eat the raw stuff.. you just need to feed a young puppy more. I'm sure your vet will discourage you from feeding the raw.. bught might be something to look into!

I fed Milo Fromm's Gold Puppy food with no ill effects at all. In the beginning when I gave him a little table food it seemed to trigger loose stool so I stopped till recently. He seems to be doing better with it all now and he's no longer on the puppy variety since he'll be one year old next month.

Our store carries both the wellness core and simple solutions. We fed her more rice today and she seems to love it. The wellness puppy food first ingredient is chicken as is the diamond. Could it be her system doesn't handle chicken well or is it more likely to be one of the other ingredients? It's hard to know what to do when it seems to be getting worse instead of better. I'll call the vet tomorrow and see if I can get something to help her. I'm not sure what to make of the raw foods. Never saw that before. Thanks again.

Could it be that you switched her from one food to anotherr too quickly and it's just the reaction to the change?

It took me about 4-5 weeks to figure out what trigger Missy's diarrhea. The vet send us home will hills allergy good and it made it worst had chicken and corn starch....look for a food without alot of ingredients, less chance for allergy problems. But you can get meds to stop the diarrhea... Metronidazole is what the usually give, might want to ask for extra, my vet gave me extra. She said sometime with sensitive dogs you just need to have some on hand.

I know when the dog has the diarrhea it can be very hard on you so hang in there it will be better tomorrow. One time Missy had it all weekend and she would have me up all night for three nights until we got to the vet.
