Opinion on Marking please.

I wonder if I might get some comments about male dogs marking. Does using a belly band help the dog to stop marking inside the house to the extend he might actually be trusted without it?

The dog I have in mind seems to know when you can see him..out of sight he will mark, so a belly band is used unless he is with someone inside the house. Any hopes the belly band will eventually make him trustworthy?

Thanks for any comments, I put this in general hoping for a response quickly! My house is not set up to be able to watch a dog continually, so I am not sure I want to have a dog wear a belly band continually!! Appreciate any comments...

I don't think the belly band will teach him anything. It is just to keep the urine off of things. Active supervision, restricted access when supervision isn't possible and praise for appropriate elimination are necessary for good housetraining including "marking".

This is the exact approach Dana uses to keep me from "Scent Marking" the toilet seat and surrounding floor. The results have been mixed so far.

Perhaps some targets (I suggest Cheerios as an option) in the bowl will facilitate better aim! Additionally, stickers or M&M's for rewarding success are often effective! Tell Dana we empathize and not to give up!

Belly band won't stop marking. You have to correct them. Teach them not to lift their legs in the house

Kodi never tried to mark in the house, but that's my understanding too. I have a friend with a young stud dog, and while she keeps a belly band on him at times there is no room for error, she also is on top of him ALL the time, catching him when he even SNIFFS at any vertical surface as if he might be considering marking.

Strangely, Beau doesn't mark in our house. He will mark in a new environment. However, when he is staying with "Aunt Karen" (Brady's Mom), I'm told that after the first day, they can remove the belly band and he doesn't mark. For whatever it is worth . . .

Also, someone on the forum (maybe on facebook?) said (in response to a guy who was going to rehome his dog if he couldn't stop it from marking because he was building a new house) that she was able to stop using a belly band after the dog wore it for awhile "because a dog doesn't like peeing on itself." So, maybe???

nope won't help, generally Flynn, treat as a housetraining issue. ... jean Donaldson ...."I am very much with Ian Dunbar that leg-lifting is a housetraining issue and should be trained as such. Airtight management, meaning crate - training and active supervision is imperative along with a reward regime for all outdoor urination (implying, of course, that the owner accompanies the dog outside so reward can be well-timed) and, finally, set-ups to catch the dog for mistakes indoors: interrupt the START of the behaviour, hustle him outside and then reward if he goes here. That said, let's also neuter him and give him plenty of reward-based training and enviro-enrichment"
