Question Changing name

Has anyone adopted an older dog and changed her name? We're thinking of changing our 1 year old (fading pink) dog's name. She just recently became ours and changed homes, would changing her name be hard on her? I've seen where people have changed puppies' names, but I'm wondering about an older dog. She really didn't even seem to know her name when we got her. Maybe it was just us saying it she wasn't used to. It's hard to call her a name someone else picked out, but I don't want to stress her more. Although she happily comes no matter what we call her, so maybe it would be fine. Any thoughts?

Well, I don't know if it is much of a comparison given the age of your dog, but Shelby was Cassie for about a week or so. She didn't respond to that name, so we changed it. Shelby is her sire's name, so I think she was just familiar with it and responded better to it.

Also, we all give our dogs nicknames and they respond to those just fine. I don't think it would matter to much to change her name. Maybe you can pick something that is similar - same # of syllables, "s" sounds, etc.

I think it should be fine- I find I usually call both Jasper and Cash--- Buddy, coo coo, puppet, monster, crazy --- they respond to the tone of my voice.

what is her name and what are you thinking of changing it to? and when do we get pictures?

If you change the name, I'd call her by both for a short time, till the new one is known, like hi "baby," sweet "______." She'll get used to it. When I got Milo he was 5 1/2 months old and his name was Pico Hombre. I started calling him Milo from the start, but threw in Pico . . . and an assortment of other pet names. For awhile there I think he responded to the most used "lunatic."

Her name was Zoe and my daughter wants to name her Athena (she's reading about ancient Greece). I'll try to get a picture up this weekend (I need to figure out how to do it.) Also, we've taken some pictures during the past few days and I wonder if the pink legs show up in any of those. I'll have to go through and look. So pink legs or not, hopefully I'll have a picture up soon!

You should talk to Kristin (Cartlito and Nico's mom). I believe Kristin got Lito when he was a year old and he was used to being called by a different name.

I think Athena is a pretty name. Look forward to seeing her pictures.

Best, Poornima

When you type a message if you scroll down you'll see a "manage attachemts" box. You can upload photos from your computer as long as the size isn't too big. I always use 600x whatever as the max. If you're not sure how to resize your photos to fit, get the free download of Irfanview. It has a very easy resize/resample option from the image menu. For the avatar the photo has to be really small, possible 150x whatever.

Good luck with it. We want to see your pretty (pink) baby.

I'm sure it will be fine. A lot of people change their dog's name and I actually read somewhere that you should change a dog's name when they change homes so that they have a brand new name for a brand new home. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I do know that it's relatively easy to change a dog's name. Like someone mentioned above, it's really the intonation of your voice when you say the name that they respond to at first. They get used to the actual name only later.

And, I need a picture of Zoe/Athena so I can see if a name change is appropriate or not.

He was almost two years old and used to go by the name "Mister Trump" (yes, the whole name) from the time he was only a few weeks old until then. Kristin changed it to Lito with no problems at all. The two names don't even sound similar. He probably just thought his new mamma had a really strong accent!
