Question Treats - How much??

This topic has probably been covered before, but long enough ago that I do not recall.. and there are tons of new users anyhow... soooo....

How many treats do you give your Hav a day? Whether it be for training or just to put a smile on there face!

Do you guys considere digestable chews as treats to? (flossies, raw hide, or any other type of tendon chew type stuff...)

If Beamer eats 4oz of dog food a day (raw) how much should he be consuming on top of that?
thanks!

Ryan

Biscuit gets about 4 oz of kibble a day, juiced up with some fresh chicken or whatever we are eating, and 4-6 very small Newman heart-shaped treats mid-day. He gets the occas. flossie, but isn't that interested.

I don't feed lots of treats, and he just isn't a very food motivated dog. When I am training him, I do give him 95's which are the most fab treats ever, little squares of dried beef or lamb, which is the one treat he LOVES, which my trainer recommended, since he is so picky. I tear these into TINY bits. This seems to keep him at the perfect weight (now SIXTEEN lbs ) for his frame.

HAV A GREAT DAY ! ~~AMY & BISCUIT~~
and HEATH-Y, TOO !

I don't give any treats just to give them treats. We only use treats for training and their dental treat after getting their teeth brushed.

I use a low key treat for training at home (they only have one calorie per treat too) and a bonus value treat when we are actually working (in the ring) to make it extra special.

Good thread, Ryan. I was wondering about the same today. Pablo gets 1/2 cup kibble morning and evening and a stuffed puppy kong mid-day. I usually stuff it with 3 Bil-Jac liver treats, 3-5 Charlee Bear chips a bit of his kibble and a little bit of cheese and put it in the microwave for a few sec.
When I train him, I now try to do it around his meal times so I can use some of his kibble for treats as I'm afraid I might give him too much stuff.
He also gets his Jumbo flossie almost everyday for ca. 1 hour within which he gets to eat approx. 1 curl of the whole spiral.
I think one needs to go by the dog's individual weight and exercise level. I can easily feel little piggie's ribs so he seems to be fine with what I'm doing.

Sophie and Gabe get one biscuit a day, as they can tend to constipate them if they get too much. Other than that, they get boiled chicken that I cut up in small pieces (not alot though..), sometimes some cheese.

Oh and I also give him human Kix (cereal) for potty treats and when he comes when called while off-leash.

My rule of thumb is as small as you can get away with but keeping the dog interested. But my girls each get a trader joes PB biscuit everyday when I leave, some jerky or left over dinner meat, a piece of my husband's turkey bacon in the morning, and some veggies with morning kibble. It sounds like a lot but it is small pieces and they are both pretty healthy and not over weight!

When I come home in the afternoon (about 1pm) they get a Kong stuffed with a couple of freeze dried beef liver treats that I cut up. They also have a basket with Flossies, rawhides, Texas toothpicks. They love the Flossies and really don't like the other stuff. Sometimes Kodi will play with a rawhide if he's bored, but he doesn't eat them. He will take them out and bury them.

I use those Trader PB's too! But, since they are huge, I split one between the two dogs when I leave. I guess I give total about 1-2 treats a day (mid-day ish). And a few tiny soft treats if I do training (don't do that everyday). Lately, I've found they are crazy for cheese!

Usually 1-2 Chicken Strip Jerky's a day and if we are at work maybe -3/4 Venison treats. I also train a few times a week and use little nibbles of either one. And for baths/blow dry, she gets little bites of cheddar cheese...Not a whole lot, maybe 1/4 cup or less?
