Puppy coat through the blowing stage

If to keep the Hav in a puppy cut until its blowing stage is finished...whenever that is...1 - 2 years? Can you then decide to grow it out long? I am presuming yes....as it is hair.

So if one decides that they like the long haired look but don't want to deal with the mats during blowing, then can keep it short and grow it out after?

Will it have the same texture?

Any cons to doing it this way?

Yes you can definitely do it this way, but it is possible that the coat will change texture... whether this is from cutting or from blowing coat, I can't say. Also, if there is any color tipping, you will lose it by cutting the hair off. It's possible that the dog will get it back, but it's not certain. I'm afraid of cutting Kubrick for that reason. He was some tipping that I really love (plus I like the long look better), so currently we're attempting to keep him long. We'll see if I last, LOL.

I agree with Lina. Lincoln's brother had a very similar coat to his and has been kept in a puppy coat since the first coat-blowing stage. His hair is extremely curly/wavy now. If she grew him out again, I'm not sure it would revert back to its previous less-wavy state.

However, it might be just fine. I gave Lincoln one fairly short puppy cut when he was about a year old, and his hair grew back in just the same.

You might try a longer puppy cut vs. an extreme "shave".

If you can spare fifteen min.three times a week to comb your hav...u would be amazed..I do that with molly and she rarely ever has a knot and when i bath her i use lots of conditioner and she is very easy to keep long.I don't think it is as hard to keep them long as lots think, and not that much time needed...The main thing is the weekly combing.I would never cut molly,I bought a havanese because I love the look of them and for me to cut her ..well...she would just look like a hundred and one other dogs....

Classeylassie, my Smarty never had a tangle much less a matt until she was 9 months old and BAM one day silky the next day bird's nest. I had heard this before and thought if I keep her brushed this will not happen to me. I was wrong!!!!!!! When they change coat you get tangles and matts no matter how much attention you pay to their coat..

Same thing with me Sandi, If I only brushed 3 x's a week I would be in BIG trouble with Monte. I am brushing 2x a day everyday and still removing mats. I thought Monte would be easier with the silky coat vers Riley's cottony coat and boy was I wrong. I just think each dog is different in the way they blow coat, some are easy and some are hard.

I found opposite with Molly until first year was over would get odd matt, but even then it was a matter of how much I combed her.I learned over time that at least three times a week is the least am't I should do her,but after that first year rarely even a tiny knot....she is wavy coat....

My Daisy had a very kinky/cottony nightmare coat as a puppy. I cut her into a short puppy cut, and kept it that way for about a year or so (I can't remember exactly how long now!). Then I corded her for about 9 months, then shaved those off. In one year her coat grew out, down to the floor!! It was a much much better texture (although still a bit frizzy toward her butt) and waaaaaay easier to take care of, once she hit about 2 years old.
Here are some pics so you can see the difference in her coat~
I know that keeping her in a short puppy cut was the best thing for us, and for her! She hates to be groomed!

I would have been in huge trouble with 2 of my havs if I just brushed them 3 times a week through coat change. It was more like 3 times a day. One of them went through a dream coat change, one a medium coat change, and one an OMG coat change.
