Chocolate havanese breeders??

Hi, I'm new to the forum and have fallen in love with chocolate havanese. I saw one last year at the Raleigh dog show and it was love at first sight. He was a beautiful caramel color with the brown nose and eyes. I believe he won best of breed. I spoke briefly with the handler (which is how I found out it was called a chocolate), but she was too busy for additional questions. I'd love recommendations on which breeders people have found their chocolates. I know many don't like to post their breeders names, so please feel free to pm me if you have suggestions. Although I live in North Carolina, my husband and I love to travel and wouldn't mind even going across the country to pick up a dog. We have a Coton De Tulear who is 15 years old and his health is declining (but look at his age in people years!!), he has good days when he acts like a puppy and not so good days when he doesn't even want to get off the couch. We also have a one year old mixed maltese/ yorkie who is the funniest and smartist little girl!!! She will be miserable when Truffles (our Coton) passes away. So I am starting to look at breeders for when that day comes(although hopefully we'll have a good long while) so that I have a good idea of who I'd like to contact when we're ready for another dog. I guess I rambled long enough!!!! Jocelyn

I can't help you regarding your Choc Q but wanted to ask where in NC you live? Hopefully near...I LOVE Cotons and planned on getting one before I discovered the Havs.

I live in Raleigh- not too far. When I get my havanese maybe we can have a play date! Cotons are wonderful dogs, much more common now than when I got mine 15 years ago. I had a female as well, but she died of a brain tumor when she was 7. I hope the coton breeders are starting to test like the havanese breeders do as I have heard of several health issues within the breed. When I was at the Raleigh dog show last year looking at the havanese, another lady was also watching the ring. She told me she had been thinking of a coton or a havanese and had heard that brain tumors had been a problem with the cotons. I haven't personally heard of another one, and I don't know where she had gotten her information. My sister's coton (he was on Regis and Kathie Lee many years ago) just passed away of congestive heart failure at age 14. He was a wonderful dog- my sister is devastated. The havanese remind me very much of the cotons except with lots more colors!!! Jocelyn

I love Cotons too! Actually, Dh and I were looking for either a Coton or a Hav, but DH prefered the Hav -- I think because of the colors. They are both wonderful doggies!!

to the forum Jocelyn.
I don't have recommendations for the chocolate breeder, but wanted to welcome you to the forum. I know you will get recommendations from our resident breeders.

Check out Nevena's Havanese in Las Vegas, Nv. She is not my breeder but I know she specializes in chocolate. Good Luck.

Here's a photo of "Durango" from Carol's website. He's twelve weeks, I edited his "green eye" so his eyes are probably much more amber colored in person.

What a doll!

There are some breeders who specialize in chocolates. I've seen Nevenas' website. Dusty came from a litter of three and she was the only chocolate. There aren't any chocolates in her three generation pedigree I don't think. She's one that just happened! Good luck in finding a chocolate! We love ours!

thank you all for your welcomes to the forum and the info so far. Durango is a cutie, but I want a female. Dusty is a gorgeous chocolate- I love looking at her pictures. Chocolate must be a very recessive trait for Dusty to be the only chocolate to have shown up in several generations. There is another post under the breeder section questioning breeders who specialize in chocolates- that only a few are ethical breeders. I certainly don't want to promote unethical breeders who only breed for color. Temperment and conformation are much more important qualities to the breed. Based on what I'm learning I think I need to look for breeders who breed first for those traits, do proper health testing and "happen" to get some chocolates. I want a small female so I will probably look for breeders who breed towards the smaller size of the standard. As I mentioned I am not in a big rush, so I will take my time in researching breeders. I also live only 3 hours from Richmond, so I plan on going to the Nationals. Jocelyn
