Constantly going "potty"

Is it normal for the Havanese breed to have to go "potty" every 2 1/2 - 3 hrs. We've taken Cee Cee to the Vet for a complete check-up and medically she's fine! But, she seems to either not want to hold it for any lenth of time or I'm not sure what the problem is. There are even times when I take her out and she doesn't even go and all she does is sniff out the entire yard! I've mentioned this to our previous Vet and she said to tell her to lay down or go to her crate and be a good "Girl". When I tell her to do this, she continues to BUG me until I take her out, because she will not stop bothering me until I do so. What should I do, I know she can hold it all night long and I think she should be holding it much longer during the day, don't you think?

Let me know your thoughts!

Didn't you just say that she's 22 months old in another topic? No, that is not normal. My dogs will go first thing in the morning. One more time in the middle of the day, and again in the evening before bed.

Even my 10 week old puppies don't seem to go as often as you've posted about CeeCee.

I tend to agree with your vet and would encourage you to do crate training. Yes, CeeCee will bug you. You know why? It works! It sounds like you let her out, so she's trained you.

Kimberly is exactly right . CeeCee is taking advantage of your "too good " nature. Try praising and rewarding her when she does do her business.

Going too often?

that depends, every dog is different. There is another thread entitled 'going outside & other...', it is along the same topic, you will see similar traits there as yours is exhibiting; so if your dog is otherwise healthy, it just may be her pattern. I would not be overly concerned.

Maybe she likes to go outside - Sissy loves to play outside and rings her bell to go out even when she doesn't have to go potty.

Yesterday was really pretty here and she rang her bell and just went and sprawled out on the patio.

You might try play time outside with her - run, play ball, etc. and see if she gets tired out.

If she is just sniffing the ground sometimes then maybe that has nothing to do with going potty and she just wants to go outside!

We use the hanging bells and Gucci will ring them to go inspect the yard and play a few times a day. More so when the weather is nice, but she does like to check her yard every so often.

I'd say she goes pee about 3-4 times a day and #2 about 1-2X a day...and then outside to play another 3-4X.

So, yes..I get up and open the door alot. lol

Brady goes potty a lot. I would say every few hours when we are home. There are times when he will want to go out (ring bells) after having been our less than an hour before. He always goes though. I find that if I take him for a walk, he will pee a few times and then he doesn't have to go for 4 hours or so. But, if I just take him for a quick piddle in the yard, it only lasts for 2 hours or so. He makes it throught he night no problem and if we run out, he is fine for 4 hours. I am sure he can make it longer, but why make him uncomfortable. Plus, he is perfectly potty trained and has been since he was 4 or 5 months old. With all the problems I hear about havanese having problems potty training, I am happy to take Brady outside whenever he needs to go.

i agree, my pup could go out 3x a day but he likes going outside to sniff, see what's going on in the backyard etc. when it's colder outside, he doesn't have a strong desire to go out as often but when the weather is nice, why not. i know he can hold it for 5-6 hours easily so if i can't get to the door at the time,i ignore him and he goes and lays on his pillow. but sometimes when he whines, i know he has to go and i don't want him to be uncomfortable either. no big deal for us either.

How do you teach them to ring bells?? Is that done in conjunction with crate training?
