What advise/directions do leave with your pet sitter?

Hi all,

We are leaving for vacation (Maui/ 8 days!!) in mid march, and a good friend of ours will be pet sitting Monty at our house while we are gone. I am wondering what advise and/or directions do you feel is most important to leave with a pet sitter?

- Feeding times/amounts
- Treats allowed (and specific instructions to not allow any other treats, especially table scraps)
- General potty schedule
- Favorite toys
- Routine (generic schedule)

- Veterinary info, including an emergency vet that will see him after hours if needed

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'll come back tomorrow if I think of more.

I also leave cleaning supplies with directions on how to use them.

Also, I leave a stack of small towels and shampoo for butt/foot baths, and instructions on how to give them.

I would also make sure to add grooming instructions (brushing, etc.) or show your friend how to groom him as I'm sure you don't want to come back to a completely matted dog!

Have fun in Maui!

I would DEFINITELY leave instructions to ALWAYS have identifying tags on your sweetie in the event that Monty decides to go looking for you!

Phone numbers of the neighbors, too, just in case the sitter needs help or has to find Monty if he gets loose.

I really don't mean to sound like a nay-sayer ('cause I really am not!), but my concern is always centered around keeping Molly close by.

One of the things that I always tell my sitters:

We have a 6 ft. fence around the back yard and I would prefer that they only take Sissy out back to play or do her business. In my neighborhood, people are really bad to let their dogs be off- leash in their front yard, garage, etc. - some are big dogs.

I am afraid that we will be walking on leash like we are suppose to be and be on the sidewalk and a big dog will run out and attack Sissy.

I had her on leash in MY front yard and the neighbor's dog came running at us in MY yard and was barking and growling at us.

There is a leash law in my city but people just seem to ignore it.

Also,
I would tell them to watch for her poop/pee time so they know how many times she went each day.
Clean water everyday with a washed bowl.

Of course, vet numbers. Call your vet ahead of time and ask about after hours - do they answer - if not - who would you call?
(My daughter just experienced this - her vet doesn't answer after hours or on Sundays-she found a 24 hour vet in a nearby city) Her beagle ate several Claritin D pills.

Does your little one get in purses/luggage that they might bring? My Sissy would... You might provide a place up high for their luggage.

How many treats they can give each day - I normally put each day's worth in a baggy. Chew treats available.

AND what everyone else said.

Enjoy your time in Maui - I am jealous!!!

As Maureen said, neighbors numbers, but also the number of someone who the dog know well, in case they have to call someone for a "rescue" If the dog gets loose, he might not come to the sitter, but someone else he is familiar with.

It sounds like there are way to many instructions so my suggestion would be for you to stay home and I'll go in your place!! LOL
