give your dog a shank bone?

it was recommended to me to give my dog a shank bone as a special treat only when i leave him for a couple of hours. it will keep him busy, etc. i guess after he eats all the marrow out of the bone you stuff it with cheese, etc. he has been allergies so it would have to be a pork shank or something else but i am a little nervous leaving it with him unsupervised. does anyone out there give their dog a shank?

I'm not sure how a shank bone is different than a marrow bone, but I did feed my guys marrow bones. But I spoke to someone at the pet store where I bought them and he didn't recommended them as they are the bones most likely to break your dog's teeth. They are very hard weight bearing bones. If the shank bones are somewhat like that, then leaving them with your dog unsupervised is probably ok as it would be very difficult to break the bones and choke on them. BUt it's not something I would feel comfortable doing.

Hi!

I would not leave him unsupervised while chewing on a bone. Someone is always with my Beamer when we give him his raw bones. Speaking raw marrow bones, I was told not to give them to Beamer since they are VERY hard and could break his teeth.. Not sure if thats true or not.. anyone here give their havs marrow bones?

I'm also in the supervision only camp. Likewise, my understanding is that a lot of veterinarians have said they get calls regarding broken teeth on big beef bones.

Yeah, I only give beef/pork neck bones to Beamer. Those bones softer and are easy to chew on. The marrow bones feel like rocks! I can see how little dog teeth could easily be broken on those things..

I've never given Valentino any bones but if I did I would do it only under supervision! I think we have a majority on this topic!

lol well have we determined if shank bones are the same as marrow bones? Don't want to scare you needlessly.

Edit: I just did a search and found that shank bones are for med to large dogs. Not small dogs.
