Just got back from my 1st dog show!

Well, I finally met a Havanese in person! Wow, what cuties they are. I went with my husband who...happened to injure his back earlier this morning, but still went with me...poor guy. He was in a lot of pain ;-( He pushed our youngest in a stroller for his own support and my daughter was fascinated by the all dogs and want to sit ringside and watch all the dogs.

I saw a lot of breeds I haven't seen ever before, some where furry, some not so much. But I have to say that there was a chinese crested there that I thought was very quirky and charming. Such a girly dog. They look like little stallions and I love the tuffs of hair nears its paws like a clydsedale. I wouldn't want to own one due to their skin problems, sun protection and clothing, etc needed in winter, but if they ever get an acne free, no sunscreen needed and I am no longer with my husband...I would get one. Until then, my husband is saying NO WAY.

We got there about 15 minutes before the Havanese were to go into the ring, I briefly said hi to Sandy, a breeder in our area and told her that we would try to talk to her later afterwards. Never got a chance to talk to her as she went ringside to another breed showing and I didn't want to interrupt her viewing of another breed that she is partial too. So I spoke with a few other breeders and got pretty much the same info on how wonderful they are.

Diane, If you read this, we couldn't find you after the show...were you by chance wearing a pink jacket? I was really hoping to talk to you too! Meeting another forum member would have been a plus too. It is always nice to meet someone face to face ;-)

Incredible little dogs they are.

I loved reading your thoughts on seeing the Cresteds. They really do resemble Clydsedales at times now that I think about it. Ha ha!

You'd know Diane by the color(s) of her hair, probably more than her jacket. She has beautiful streaks of burgandy, red, and purple (?) in her hair. She's fairly quiet in person (well, ringside when I've seen her) until you get her away from the ring. She's incredibly friendly and helpful. I've only seen Diane in person a whopping six or seven times, but there is no mistaking her once you meet her. She's one of a kind and definitely memorable.

Nope the lady in the pink jacket didn't have that color of hair...though now that you mention it.....I saw a lady with that description of hair come up and talk to another Hav breeder (from Oconomowoc) I just finished talking to. I actually excuted my leaving by saying, I will let you 'chit chat' with her now. Then before we left, my husband said that she (lady with the colored hair) was talking to Sandy as she was still sitting ringside. He made that connection.

OH...Darnit, I should have asked one of the breeders to point her out to me. I just looked around for someone with a Havanese as they were scattered around it was pretty hard to find them after the show ring. I bet that was her!

I bet that was her! She was right behind (well next to me) waiting for the breeder from Oconomowoc to finish talking to me. I left and walking right around her!

I felt akward walking up to people asking to point out, for what I feel as 'competition' breeders. I should have asked...next time!

Kristy I know how you feel about being at your first show, you hate to interrupt people. Once you go a few times and meet different people it will be easier and so much fun. Every show I have been to everyone has been so friendly.

I had a neat meeting myself today also. I was at an agility trial all day talking to different handlers & trainers about competing and learning all the games. While I was standing talking to my friend who's havanese was competing two ladies came up to talk to her as well. She introduced us and mentioned that we each have havanese. Then all of a sudden one of them pulls out a picture of their have, I did a double take and said wait a min. what is his name?? It was our own McGyver from the forum LOL. I knew they lived close but never expected to run into a forum member at an agility trial, it was fun and great to meet them.

How about getting a few phone numbers or emails? I talked (and email conversed) to many breeders before I bought my puppy. Everyone I talked to was totally friendly, knowledgable and excited about their breed. They produced pictures, if I needed them and they never tired of answering my questions or talking about their experiences.
Good luck!! I'd love to go to a dog show! Never had the chance.

They are very addicting! Sounds like you had a good time. Have you checked for a havanese club in your area?

Leeann- woo hoo! Having a Hav buddy to compete with is great!

Yes, it was fun - a little tougher with the kids and a hubby that couldn't walk well....but worth it to see them in person.

As for breeders, I have already contacted about 6 within driving distance...4 of them in my state alone, all do health testing, recommend to come see them and their dogs, and ask as many questions as I need. I was just hoping to speak to one of the breeders I had emailed in the past couple months. Most were emailed back in the November 2007 - New year of 2008. So it has been awhile.

My last breeder I talked to at the show, to my surprise was a breeder that I have emailed already. So at least I met one of them, just didn't plan on looking around for anyone but the two I had in my head that morning. The one I spoke with just flew from WI to Colorado to have one of their dogs breed. I think the sire came from Germany? She said that they won't know for another couple weeks if she 'took' or not. She was very excited about this litter. She is actually the closest breeder to us as well. About 10 miles away. More expensive than some of the others, but she runs a doggy day care and told us to stop by and see her dogs, as she takes them to work with her daily. She also has obedience, puppy, agility classes as well.

Tough decision when it comes down to price and timing of the litter. When we are ready, I will have to contact them again.

At least I was prepared with some information on the breed, so the breeder didn't have to do all the talking. Although I am sure they love to talk about their animals.

I am glad that you were able to go to the dog show. I love going to them. I remember last year we went and we were interested in the havanese and then this year when I went it was a totally different experience...I went with our breeder and met our friend who is a breeder as well. We all had soo much fun. We are all going to Nationals this year...should have fun!!! We got Jillee as a pet and boy did we get soo much more...plus I think I have been bitten with the show bug as well as mhs!!!!

LOL! That was me! I had to evaluate a dog for someone and didn't get a chance to hang out ringside right after the show, but Mary was parked across from my handler so I was able to bug her at will! LOL I am glad that you were able to come out to the show and meet some breeders! Feel free to email or PM me anytime with questions! Oh...and another good place for you to look would be the Windy City Havanese Club website (www.windycityhavaneseclub.org) or the Coulee Havanese Club site (www.couleehavaneseclub.org). I am on the board of the WCHC club and we only allow breeders who do minimum health testing and whose breeding dogs passed the testing onto the breeder referral list. There are breeders out here who don't do all the testing or whose dogs failed but they advertise they do testing, so be sure to do your homework, get the registered name of the parents of the litter and check the OFA website to make sure they passed.

Be sure to keep me posted next time you are coming out for a show, I would love to meet you in person next time! LOL
