Is this a crazy idea?

I can't help thinking about the recent threads about some of our furbabies going through frightening and possibly very costly medical issues. It makes me wonder if there's any way we, as a group, could form some kind of fund, with small donations, possibly on a monthly basis, that would be there to help owners who might otherwise not be able to keep their havs or hav babies who might otherwise not get the proper care simply because of the prohibitive expense.

Is it too simplistic to think something like this would work. I know I personally feel heartbroken every time one of these stories makes it to the group and I so wish we could help. What do you all think?

You know, I had been thinking along the same lines. I was even wondering, since the forum has so many members, if we might be eligble for some kind of group rates for some really good pet health insurance??
Just a thought.

I have actually thought of this as well----but unfortunately I don't know how it would be regulated and keep people from joining the forum to get their medical bills paid.It would sure take a strong person to accept or deny help to someone, someone who's heart was in the right place, but a skeptic as well, you know? In a sense, this would be to intervene before putting a dog down,or rescue steps in?

I don't know, but I think you must be careful to have your heart out there, but keep it from being stomped on as well. Tough call.......

Geri,

It's a nice thought, but who would qualify? (by how well known they are? by how many posts?) I mean it's a very 'slippery slope' if you know what I mean. Where ever there are people that are good hearted and trying to do a good thing, there will always be people in the shadows looking to take advantage.

Don't get me wrong, I like the idea, just do not know how it would be administered?

Ryan

Ryan and Julie, I do see your point. Sad that people would take advantage, and yet . . . for the truly needy . . . I guess I just want our extended family here and all our hav babies to be healthy and able to continue loving each other. Maybe someone could come up with a better idea.

I like Dawna's idea of cheap pet insurance-----that way we could participate if we wanted to.

I know just for us----I could not afford a huge medical bill for Vinnie or Quincy. If it was a matter of even 1000.00 they would be put down...not from lack of love, but from lack of funds. When people struggle with kids and family and buying food, trying to pay bills as we do--I simply would not even have an option. The sad truth.

One problem with insurance is that most of them don't cover inheritable diseases/ailments. A congenital liver shunt most likely won't be covered anyway. That being said, after spending over $2000 in 2 months on Panda, I now have insurance on Maddie. I'm hoping by getting insurance, it won't ever be needed.

Also, I think most people here will volunteer to help if they can. I know that with Leslie's Shadow a lot of people pulled together and sent checks to help out. I'm not sure how much money exactly was raised, but it was a substantial amount. I think that in general if one of us is in need of financial help with their Havs we are all of us willing to give some help when needed.

That was precisely my point. Wouldn't it be wonderful if, given those circumstances, you knew that you wouldn't have to deal with the dollar aspect of it but only focus on doing what your dogs needed.

Lina, I do remember that time. It had been part of my plan to contribute at that time also because I cried buckets over Shadow and wanted to do something to help in whatever small way. Unfortunately at precisely the same time one of the members of my real estate group was dying from a brain tumor and there was an urgent cry for donations from the group since her husband was about to lose their house. It was days from being foreclosed on. Because his wife was so sick he didn't even want to tell her about the problem. So my money, along with donations from that wonderful group went to saving his house.

It's just sad and I know there has to be a solution.

Let me chime in and share that between the complete refund from Shadow's breeder and the extremely generous donations of the wonderful "family" here, just over 1/2 of her $7000 medical bill was paid.

I, too, wonder just how we can best help those in need. Laurie was so instrumental in taking the lead w/the donations for Shadow, perhaps she will have a suggestion as to what she thinks may work best. Besides, she works in the insurance industry!
