Toy breed playmates? Good with Kids?

Ok, after reading about how dogs can have anxiety problems and are usually better with a companion...I was wondering if we got a Havanese...what other breeds of toy size dogs are out their that are good if raised with kids.

We couldn't afford at this time 2 Havanese...so another breed, that is more readily available, (and less expensive with health testing, etc) for our Hav to have as a playmate would be wonderful.

Any toy breeds come to mind? Havanese get along well with most dogs...so I guess on the standpoint of the other breed, gets along with other dogs, friendly, playful, good with children as well. (I know socialization and how the children handle the dog is something I would have to ensure was done right).

We do not have cats or birds, nor will we in the future.

So thoughts anyone?

I love my shih-tzus. They are non-shedding, sturdy little dogs and have been great with my kids.

Kim, are they stubborn though? Well, I guess any dog can be stubborn!

I would love a dog I can up its hair in a bow! Hee HEE

I really haven't had any problems with them at all. Housetraining wasn't as quick with them as they were with my bigger breeds, but from everything I've been reading on here, maybe that's a toy breed characteristic?? Anyway, they are half brother/sister, and they are like night and day. Sushi is my male...he follows me EVERYWHERE, is always by my side and in the same room that I'm in, but if I pick him up to sit on my lap, he gets off and lays next to me. Same thing in bed...only likes to sleep at my feet. Sake is the girl...she goes 100 mph all the time, very independent and off on her own, but the MINUTE I sit down, she's up in my lap and stays there until I get up. She's the one who sleeps next to me in bed. The kids pick them up, ride them around in strollers and dump trucks, and they tolerate it all with no complaint. They are average size, I think, for Tzus...Sushi is 11 lbs, and Sake is 9.

Sounds like you have a couple of well behaved companions. I will have to look into the Shih-tzu information on line and she if they are a fit for us as well.

Thanks Kim!

Why not look into Havanese rescue? They might have some sweet furbabies available.

Yes, I have been watching the rescues...though haven't seen any in the 6 months I have been looking in our state...but never thought about it for a 2nd dog. Good idea! DUH!

Rescues don't ship dogs do they? I would think that they would want a home visit and meet us as well?

But still if anyone has other breeds that they can think of .... I would enjoy to know so I can do research on the breed.

What about west highland terriers? There a lot more common (maybe less expensive?) and I know that there are a lot of great breeders that do health testing on them. Norah has a westie buddy that she loves to play with.

Kristy, I like Chinese Cresteds! I know you mentioned seeing them at the dog show this weekend, and your hubby thinking NOT! My DH thinks I'm crazy for loving their look too. I have a friend who has had three. They are soooo sweet. Her last one was a powderpuff, and she was all white, this means she had hair everywhere. She was a still a very striking dog. They were all a bit more energetic than Posh is, but I think that totally depends on the dog. I have seen a couple end up in rescue, and go quickly.

I also absolutely love King Charles Cavaliers. My sister in-law has a lovely girl named Lucy who is coming to stay with us tomorrow whilst she travels to Hawaii. Lucky us, and lucky sister in-law...

I think all dogs from reputable breeders are on the pricey side...so I agree you should look to rescue for doggie number two. There are soo many out there that need good homes. I think too, that you could probably go out and travel to meet the dog, and still find yourself getting quite the deal...
