Chewing Feet

Hi All. I am glad to have the opportunity to send a new thread to everyone. I apologize for not having posted in some time. I have been very busy with the baby coming and with work. It's all been such a whirlwind right now but I know that everyone here is very undertanding and can identify with what I have on my plate. Thanks to you all.

Now onto the topic at hand. Radar has been for a while, exhibiting a rather odd habit of chewing on his feet. He'll begin with licking his feet like he's grooming himself sorta like a cat and then he'll chew like he's biting his nails and then it's really odd because he then chews the hairs and he'll pull on them like he's ripping out mats or something. It's very odd and I can't see this sorta thing as being normal havanese behavour. Does anyone else have this sort of behaviour with their havs?

Thanks

Derek

Welcome back Derek!
Nice to see you again!

Sounds like Radar has an allergy to his food. Often times the paw licking/biting is a sign of it.

Hey Derek! It's great to see you back here.

The most common reason for chewing feet/nails/pads is due to allergies. The second most common reason is due to boredom.

I have one girl that chooses to chew on one single toenail. It is stained from her saliva and obvious, but she doesn't lick or chew any other place. Our vet calls it, "her worry bead" and says she does it out of boredom. She is highly intelligent and does need more stimulation than the others. Could that be Beamer's need?

Hi Derek, Great to see you again!

Is there a specific time Radar is doing this, like just at night in bed? I agree, a food allergy is probably the most common cause, but stress can have the same effect.
I went through the same thing for a period of time with Cooper but was finally helped by using a medication. I know lots of people would rather not go that route, but it worked great for Cooper. If you haven't changed anything in his diet, it might be some type of stress.
