Xpen project....

I'm not sure if anyone will benefit from this, but I thought I would post anyways in case anyone is in the same situation as me. I have no areas in my house to put an xpen that aren't carpeted. I do not let my pets go in the kitchen (pet-peeve of mine) so I had to come up with a way to put a crate/xpen on a carpeted area that would not hinder my pup's potty-training agenda. I have a spare bedroom that I just keep my cats stuff in. The cats have now had to part with half the room and they will be sharing half of the room with the new pup. After some good info and tips on here, I have tweaked my plan a little bit and this is what I came up with:

1. Purchased a 5x7 area rug from Wal-Mart for $10. This was my original plan...

2. After some ideas from the great members of this forum, I went out and purchased a 4x8 sheet of 19/32 plywood, 4 treated 1x2x8 boards, and a piece of remnant vinyl flooring for a total of about $30...
[IMG][/IMG]

3. Cut the vinyl flooring to fit the 4x8 plywood and glued the flooring to the wood...
[IMG][/IMG]

4. After cutting the 1x2x8 boards, I proceeded to frame in the floor piece by glueing and screwing the boards to the plywood...

[IMG][/IMG]

5. This created a nice framed in floor area to prevent urine from running off the platform and onto the carpet. It also was perfect sized to prevent the xpen from moving around or being able to be pushed across the floor...
[IMG][/IMG]

6. I went around the frame with some waterproof caulking so no pee can get away and onto the carpet...
[IMG][/IMG]

7. Here is the finished product. I still have some tweaking to do with the size of the pen and all, but this gives you an idea if you have a couple hours of time and the need for a puppy area on a carpeted surface...

Thanks for looking!!!

This is great! I have 7.5 weeks till my Hav comes home, and I have carpet throughout my house, and not enough room in the kitchen for the x-pen. I had read about using a piece of vinyl flooring underneath, but this is great with the wood underneath!

Thanks for sharing!!!

The vinyl flooring is a great idea and at first I brought just the flooring home and set it down on the carpet....it was terrible!!!! If you are going to put the vinyl flooring down, put it on plywood that is thick enough to walk on and not split or crack. I used a 19/32 thick plywood and it works great. Hell, for $10 more you can buy the wood and the vinyl floor glue.... Imagine coming home and your pup has peed on the vinyl and you go to clean it up and you step on the vinyl to get to the mess and it just bends and folds and directs all the pee right to your foot....a hard backing is a necessity if putting the vinyl on carpet

You're right! I will be showing this to the husband so we can get that done before we pick her up! Thanks!

Great idea. My vinyl was placed on hardwood, so it didn't give, and I never had a problem with urine leaking out… but Kodi was pretty well potty trained when I got him. BUT I DID have problems with him moving the ex-pen when he got excited and jumped against the sides. The lip you made would entirely prevent that!

The only thing I would warn against is that Havanese are people-centered dogs. He won't be happy (and will make you unhappy!) if he is confined so far from the family. Generally, we advise that the expen be placed in a busy part of the home so that the puppy can still be a part of everything that is going on, even while they are confined.

Good point. The only time I plan on putting him in the pen would be while I'm working. Otherwise, it will be open for him if he wants to go in there, but I plan on tethering him to me whenever he is out until I'm comfortable with his potty training habits...
