Ear Infection?

Hello all,

I have had my havanese pup for about 8 months now. Since his hair is starting to grow like wild fire, I'm starting to notice him scratching his ear and shaking his head profusely. I have already taken him to the vet and they just offered an ear medication which temporarily stops the itching, but does not fully remedy the problem.

My question is, has anyone experienced with the scratching and continuous head shaking? And another note, his ears smell really bad. Would plucking the inside of their ears hurt them?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

A bad smell is a pretty likely sign of infection. Call your veterinarian.

Definetly call your vet. I find pulling out ear hair and cleaning their ears religiously keeps all that stuff at bay. My vet gave me an ear cleaner which balances out the PH in their ears so that they dont get yeast infections.

-Over the summer Carmen got a fox tail in her ear, and she shook her head a lot for that. That was a surgery.
-I know ear mites cause dark ear wax, and a smell, and scratching etc. Hopefully its not that.

Good luck, hope your baby feels better.

Yes, I agree with everyone else....go see your vet! Now this is on the extreme end of dog's having ear infections but....we were out to dinner with some friends last night and she told me that her English bulldog was going to have his entire ear canal removed due to chronic ear infections. Evidently that breed is very susceptible to ear problems. Obviously he won't be able to hear out of that ear anymore but as it is now, it is so swollen that the ear drops won't even go in. Anyway, not trying to scare or alarm you just encourage you to get it under control! Keep us posted!

NaiWister, how is your puppy today? Did you take him to the vet?

BTW, curious about your "Beard Papas" name - I LOVE Beard Papas cream puffs!

How is ur puppy...

My puppy had 2 mild ear infections at 3 months. It was caused by water entering his ears and it wasn't dryed proparly. I had him on antibiotic drops 2x's a day for two weeks and every other day an ear cleaner. Now every 2 weeks he has his ears cleaned. B/c of the floppy ears it traps moisture. Most floppy ear dogs have problems.

Also U can pluck out the inner hairs with ur fingers or tweezers, but be very careful you don't go too deep to poke his ear drum. It is an uncofortable feeling for them but I was told it doesn't hurt them.

Hope ur puppy is feeling better.
