back on the leash!

ever since spring has touched the air, my little mugsy has stopped listenting to me when out on a walk.
we have gone all winter without a leash and he has been just great, stops when i say 'stop', turns when i say 'this way'... and hasn't run after any other dogs we meet.
but the last few days, he has run into the street, run into the parking lot and run towards any dog or cat he sees without listenting to me at all.
i'm afraid it's back to halter and leash for mugs.

Darn right it is! It's way too scary. We have two acres and I like to let Gryff run around by the side of our house away from the road. I ALWAYS have really good treats on me when I that, stuff like steak and hot dogs, so I can lure him back to me. I am so afraid of him getting hit. When I walk him, he is always on a leash.

Now that spring is approaching - there is so many smells around. Sissy's favorite thing to do is smell flowers - she doesn't eat them just smells.

It's really scary when they don't listen. Good luck on your training.

Oh I agree Joe, keep him on a leash at all times until you have 100% reliability on recall. It's something that takes a long time to learn (and until my dogs are too old to run fast, they always have been on leash). Now with my oldest guy, I have to use a leash to encourage him to keep up with the young 'ens.

I have also been experimenting with walking off leash - but only in off leash conservation areas, devoid of cars. Mind you, Oreo stays away from dogs, as he is afraid of other dogs he doesn't know so he walks beside me and hides behind me when he sees other dogs. In my case, I have to work on socializing so he can be more confident, but if ever Oreo decided to be very brave and run off and not listen, I would definately put him back on leash for sure. I think its spring in the air.

Yep back to the drawing board.

I have to say my girls are very well trained. They are pretty much offleash a lot of the times. They know where heel position is, they know the word wait even though it kills them sometimes, etc. But even yesterday I had a reminder that dogs will be dogs. I put the on a sidewalk in a sit stay while I was going to Leslie's house. I was grabbing things out of my car and when I shut the door, they decided it was time to run like mad dogs into leslie's yard. I called them and they were too excited and was at leslie's door long before I was. So looks like I have some work to do as well!

Joe,
Havanese are not territorial and even the best trained Havanese, could see a nice old lady down the street and want to go for a visit and nothing will stop them from accomplishing their goal. They are a breed that are meant to be social and when they have a chance, could take advantage of that time to be sure they can do a "meet and greet"! <grin> Leash and harness is a must.

just came in from a nice long walk and i feel better.
mugs jumped into his harness and was fine when i attached the leash.
i had feared he would be all out of sorts with me and the harness and just pull for the whole walk. but none of that happened, he was happy and still ran like crazy but mostly in a circle around me instead of back & forth to me. we did get tangled around a few trees...
