Something on Bogie's back

Yesterday I was running my fingers through Bogie's hair on his back and I started to feel all these little ... pimple like things. So I started feeling around and sure enough there are lots of them all over his back. I parted the hair and they do look like little pimples or scabs. I tried to take one off and it looked like taking off a scab, red underneath. Definitely not fleas or ticks.

So, since Brando was at the vet for a grooming I decided to take Bogie with me when I picked up Brando. I asked the vet to take a quick peak at Bogie just to confirm it's not ticks. She said it wasn't but didn't have time to really take a good luck since I didn't have an appt and they were fully booked.

I'm really concerned as to what they can be. Has anyone seem something like that on their Hav? For all I know it's been there for months but never realized it because his hair was so long. Do dogs break out like that if they have an allergic reaction to anything? Bogie doesn't scratch at all so it doesn't seem to be bothering him. Even when I pull on them it doesn't bother him unless I accidentaly grab some hair. I checked Brando and nothing on him.

I hope you can get down to the bottom of this. Poor Bogie I know I'd be so worried not knowing what it is. Could it be fleas? I have not had experience with them... knock on wood, so I am not even sure what to look for. And it could be an allergy of some sort. I really hope you are able to find what is causing this discomfort in Bogart.

Daniel, Jasper had little red/scabby spots on him when he was younger but mostly around his face-- they were the beginning of hot spots.-- but he also was itching them fiercely, Have you changed anything recently with Bogie. If it's just on his back, could it be from a new coat or sweater? Could they be ingrown hairs? Is his coat changing or is he blowing coat? I hope you get to the bottom of it- when do you take him to the vets?

I have never seen this on Kubrick, but it does seem like it could be from an allergy, like Missy has said. Have you made another vet appointment to figure this out? I hope you can get to the bottom of it.

Yikes- sounds like a rash? Maybe something from a plant made it all the way to his skin and he itched it?

Well I haven't made an appt. When the vet took a cursery look at it, she said I could just keep an eye out on it for a few days and see what happens.

I haven't changed anything at all for Bogie. Food wise right now he's eating Turkey patties. His meat changes every 2 weeks. I was thinking maybe ingrown hairs but I have no idea what the look like. Since he doesn't seem to be bothered by them I think I'll just keep an eye out for the next few days. The only thing I can think of is Bogie went to a new groomer last week. Maybe a reaction to the Shampoo.

Daniel,

Here are some links to info and pictures that show the pattern of how allergies (both inhaled and food based) will affect a dog's skin:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body...allergies.html

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/food_allergies.html

In general, lesions on the back would not be typical for an allergy - it usually presents on the underside, the head, and the feet/legs. Some other possibilities to look into: flea allergy, sarcoptic mange (can be treated with an Ivermectin injections).

Just keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't scratch so much that he causes a secondary skin infection which will need to be treated with antibiotics. I hope Bogie is able to get some relief soon! Poor boy!

I have kids w/sensitive skin and no experience with dogs, but based on that my first guess would be a new shampoo.

It sounds like it could be bites--do they itch?

I've been watching him for the last 2 days and he hasn't itched once so I definitely don't think it's bothering him.

I'll make an appt for next week and hopefully by then they'll be gone.
