New Member / New Hav!

After several months of research, we decided on the Havanese breed (one I had never heard of!) We got Miley when she was 9 weeks old on Easter weekend from a breeder here in Nebraska. My husband & I have 2 kids, a boy age12 & a girl age 8. We had a poodle for 16 years (our first baby) and after we had to put him to sleep, we swore we'd never get another dog. Well, 3 years later we have a puppy. We just felt it was important for our kids to grow up with a dog...many valuable lessons can be learned from having a dog. Anyway....I have a few questions since we've gotten Miley:
#1, we have an issue with tear staining. Her parents do not have tear staining, so I'm hoping she outgrows it. Are the odds pretty good she'll outgrow it? I've switched to distilled water and tried the boric acid/water and a flea comb. It helps some, but the hardest part is getting her to sit still while I work on her face. Any ideas?
#2...I see talk on this board about Havs "blowing their coat". Does this only happen once when they lose their puppy fur, or every year? I was under the understanding they do not shed, so I'm hoping it's only once.
We are all absolutely in love with this dog. She does the funniest things. We've got to buy her a little cape, because she literally "flys" through the air off of the end of the recliner. Of course we laugh, and she does it even more. The only really bad thing she's done is chewed a hole in the corner of a wall...through the wallpaper, through the drywall, all while I was in the shower for 20 minutes. But I still wouldn't trade her for anything!

Welcome to the forum. Miley is adorable.
My girls both blew coat at around 10 months and again around 2 years old. After that, they may do it but I don't notice it as much. You'll know when Miley is blowing her coat, trust me.
I think some dogs outgrow the tear staining and others don't. There are remedies though and sometimes a simple food change or using bottled water can help.
Enjoy your baby. She's certainly a cutie. Boy, can I relate to the shoelace chewing and the drywall chewing. Been there, my girls have done that.

to you and Miley. I love that name (I'm a closet Hannah Montana fan), and she's adorable!

For tear staining, you might want to try something called Angel Eyes (I think that's the name of it anyway). I've been using it on my shih tzus for the past month, and I've really noticed a difference in tearing, but I think it was specifically designed to work on tear stains. It's a powder that you sprinkle on their food.

Good luck, and can't wait to see more pictures of your baby!

Welcome to the forum! We spent four years in Omaha while my husband was in school (at Creighton).

You'll survive blowing coat! Dusty is two and she went through the blowing coat stage late at about 14 months. It's still nothing like a shedding dog. You will be brushing Miley a lot if she is in a full coat at that point, but even then, you won't be finding hair all over the house.

Tear staining is manageable. I hear puppies have trouble with it when they are teething, but many outgrow it, and for the ones that don't it can be controlled.

I think alot of havs tear when they are teething and that may just stop on its own in a few months. Until then, you can keep the area clean by washing it with a little baby shampoo puppy shampoo and then dab baby powder or baking soda on it 1-2X a day (that helps dry the fur out and prevent the discoloring) At this point, I'd try to just manage it. My vet didn't like the Angel Eyes, so I only used it a few weeks, it does have an antibiotic in it, so check with your vet first on how long to use it.

Miley is a cutie!
