New Puppy - New Member

Hi Everyone:

Our family will be getting our first dog in 6 weeks. He is a sable Havanese and his name is Izzy (His 10 & 15 year old sisters named him)

I'm going to need a lot of support from you because I'm so new to all of this! We currently have a 7 month old Maine Coon (cat) and I'm worried how to introduce them, any suggestions?

Thanks
Jane in Michigan

Jane,
Welcome to the forum!! I can't answer the cat question because our kitty was already used to dogs when we brought McKenna home. The poor kitten was brought into our house 10 years ago when we had four dogs!!
Congratulations on Izzy. What a cutie. I hope the 6 weeks goes by fast for you.

Welcome to the forum, Jane. Your puppy is adorable. You will enjoy this forum.

We are dealing with this issue right now, but the most I think I can hope for is for our cat to eventually tolerate our dog. They will probably never be friends. I'm having some success with the training Salsa is learning in puppy kindergarten classes. Our cat is very shy and 4 years old. Salsa is 4 months now and we have had her about a month. I don't think you'll have many problems because your cat is still pretty young so they should eventually get along well. If you google "introducing dog to cat" a lot of information on this will come up. Here is one link: http://www.westwinddogtraining.com/catsanddogs.pdf

Welcome! I have a 7 year old and 10 year old cat. The older cat had lived with a dog when she was young, but it had been a very long time. Both of my cats moved to the basement for a few weeks when Brady came home. They were not thrilled. Brady loves them to peices and would torment and play with them all day if they would go for it. They have all learned to share space now. Fortunately for the cats, Brady will not do the basement stairs so this remains their safe place to get away from him. I also kept Brady in the kitchen/den with gates for a long time so the cats could jump the gate and get away. I know some cats adapt better, but even mine are now doing fine. Jake even plays with Brady sometimes. I would take it slow and not push too hard. I would also make sure they have a safe place they can go. Good luck!!

I've always had dogs and cats and it is important to make sure your puppy respects your cat. A lot depends on your cat's personality - some run which makes for a great game of chase and others stand their ground or ignore the puppies. I've got a runner now and MeMe and my Maltese torture him. Yet they sleep together on my lap at night, so go figure.

Well, we have a 4 month old havanese and a 8 year old siamese cat. Kona wants to play with her, but she will let him know it's NOT okay. She's declawed, so she doesn't hurt him, but they "tolerate" each other.
WELCOME TO THE LITTER! Izzy is sooo cute! I bet you are so excited to get her home
Yes, more pics! WE LOVE PICS!!!
