Help Lilly has sores on her shoulder.

Last week I did not comb out Lilly's hair for two days and she developed a mat. Well she started scratching at it and by the time I combed it out she had scratched two sores. Well now those two are ten. I am bathing her with an oatmeal shampoo twice a week and have made sure her nails are trimmed. I gave her benadryal (sp) but I am afraid she will still scratch at them. Then are located on her shoulder and tope of her leg. What do I do now?

While in the shower I thought of something I should have thought of tobegin with. A t-shirt. Now how simple is that. I will see how it works. Nothing like a shower to clean the cob webs out of the head.

I hope the tshirt works, but I find that if they wear clothes for more than an hour or so, they get mats

Maybe the mat was from itching and the rash is unrelated? Did anything touch her in that spot that you know of?

If it doesn't start to get better, I'd take her to the vet or atleast call them and get a recommendation or prescription for something topical, I would say benadryl cream or calamine (sp?) lotion, but I am not sure if that safe for dogs, be sure to check first!

Kisses to Lilly!

Yeah, I agree with Kara. She probably needs to go to the vet and see if she needs an RX. The itching could very well have caused the mats.

Thanks. I will watch her until Thursday or Friday and see if the t-shirt helps then I will call the vet unless things change.

Katrina,

I would take her to the vet tomorrow if you can. If the sores are spreading on their own now, it is very likely she has a systemic bacterial skin infection (like impetigo). It can start from a local skin infection (like from the mats), but when it goes into their system, it will start to spread throughout the body if not treated. It will not go away on its own - she will need to take oral antibiotics, which will clear it up.

Don't be super alarmed - it happens - my kids and Lincoln have experienced it before. But she will need the meds.

Keep us posted on how she's doing!

Sorry your baby is not doing well. Definetly take her to the vet to be safe. I hope it turns out ok!

Matts can form from a harness and from any collar. But I still feel safer in using a harness on Rommy-Miss Paige is getting a new collar next week-a rolled collar which is not suppose to cause matting as bad as the regular collar.

And I agree take your little one to the vet-could be an infection and you want to make sure that is treated before it gets worse. Keep us posted on how your "baby" is doing
