Ew! Ticks!!

I just pulled FIVE ticks off Gryff. I need to sit down now and do a real thorough job at getting them off. I just gave him his Revolution on the 15th along with the collar to combat deer ticks. They give me the willies. Speaking of willies, that is where I took a tick off of my poor Alec a few years ago. He was really good about it. If it were my DH, he probably would have fainted!

Yuck Yuck Yuck!!!! That would not be fun at all!!! We just gave Betzie a bath and I found a little bug on her and I was like gross...scrub scrub....she did soo well until it came to the teethe brushing then didn't like it so much. We trimmed her nails and the pads on her feet as well. I am taking her to confirmation tommorow so I wanted her to look nice. Jillee is getting a bath in the morning.

We're off to get Frontline tomorrow...and please don't anyone tell me how bad Frontline is because I'm in tick heaven here. It's the only thing that keeps them at bay here.

Yes, tick season is here and I have been dreading it. Jackson has just been getting flea/tick baths each week, but I have been pulling ticks out of his fur every day. DH just found one attached. It had left a big bull's eye on his skin . . . freaked me out. I guess I'll go to the vet tomorrow and get some Frontline Plus. Any suggestions on how to keep them off his fur? I wondered if I could spray something lightly that would discourage them. I may spray the yard too . . . I can't stand them!

If they can make preventative medicine for dogs, then why not for people? When we first got Gryff and he had his shots, they gave him a shot for Lyme. He reacted so badly from that shot I'm afraid to give it to him again. He had a lump on his side for over a week and was totally lethargic.

My trainer suggested Avon's "Skin So Soft" spray. I haven't tried it yet but she claimed it worked as well as well as anything else - plus makes them smell good...

I took a tick out of Casper this morning...and yes they will give me the me the willies. I try to keep him out of areas where he can get ticks, he must have gotten this one in our yard.

Ticks are a daily problem around here. I use Frontline, and although it kills them (within 12 hours they say), it does not repel them. My breeder and vet both do not recommend Advantix for small dogs, so I have stayed away from that. Plus, you can't have it near cats and I have 2. The vet did recommend a tick collar for Brady, but it too said not to have near cats so I did not use it. I think it was called Preventic. It is used to repel ticks. Fortunately, Brady is easy to spot them on. They usually go right for his head and neck areas. There was one day a few weeks ago when we went walking and I pulled 8 off of him as soon as we got home. Um, yuck!!! My yard is fine, but walks are a problem. He loves to jump in pacasandra, weeds, leaves, long grass and even the stream.

It must be that time of year because AKC's April Newsletter had an article on ticks (located here), which includes photos of ticks, removal advice and tick FAQ's. They also have some preventative meds listed there, including a repellent, but I haven't heard of anyone using it on Havanese yet.

I'm so glad that we don't have to deal with ticks. I think I've only seen one in my whole life.

I have never ever had a problem with ticks (of course now that I say it) and have never used any of the meds on my guys. My lawn care company does a 4x a year tick application that kills any ticks that fall on the property. I think in Lily's 5 years, we had only one tick. None on the other dogs. I know for you Karen, that would not help because of your walks, but we dont walk very often because they get so much excercise in the yard. But it is for people to think about who have their dogs in their own yard most of the time.
