timid dog acting agressive

my little 23 month old havanese pup is such a shy and timid dog. (I've only had her since July) she is afraid of everyone and every new situation. However, when my daughter's best friend comes over, Coco charges at her and barks. ?? and today I thought she was going to bite her? This young lady (21 year old) is a very sweet girl and has dogs of her own at home. Coco NEVER acts like this around anyone but her. Coco has never been alone with this person so I don't know why she does this. Any ideas?

fear, is why they do this, have you considered getting a professional ? you say she's afraid of everyone, what does she do when someone else comes in.? When they lunge they 'attack' in order to prevent from being attacked

When anyone else comes in she usually will just give a bark and then retreat under the coffee table. When she sees this particular person she runs right towards her lunging and barking. Mind you, this person hasn't shown any aggression towards Coco at all.. she was just walking through the room.
What kind of a professional does she need? I would love for her to be confident and ok with people visiting us or when we visit them. She cowers when people go to pet her and tries to run from them. I do notice that she doesn't like other dogs much either.

It may be the smell of the girl's other dogs that she's opposed to. But Dave's right, it is fear related.

A dog can be born what breeders call "soft". But soft will turn to timidity and fear if the pup is not properly socialized during the very critical socialization period, age 4-16 weeks. After that, there isn't much you can do to change the dog, but definitely an experienced professional can help you help her cope in different situations better. Don't go to any place corporate, like a Pet Smart. Look for an experienced canine behaviorist online.

Have you tried, on neutral territory (aka not your house), a high value treat (real chicken or maybe natural balance dog sausage), and have the 'stranger' give offer your dog the treat, open hand, have your dog approach the human.

yeah who knows why this particular girl bothers her more than others. She does sound like she needs some socialization work. With some help you can definitely make a difference. I would recommend a few one on one sessions with a trainer .who can give you ideas to help . If you want help finding a good trainer you can pm me with your zip code.

PM's aren't working right now for the whole forum. The problem is, since PM's aren't working, we're not sure that the admin knows about the problem! Hopefully they will look in on us sooner or later and fix it!!!

if you click on the ! button, bottom left, it sends an email to the mods in that section and to the 'owner' of the forum.

I just did it.

The "report post" button? I thought that just went to the mods, so that they could remove spam or inappropriate posts. Good to know it also goes to the Admin, and can be used as a "HELP!" button as well!
