a step backwards

after weeks without piddling inside, mugsy has started to enjoy the rug as his personal toilet again.

and i was just starting to get comfortable with the idea that just maybe we had the housetraining down.

a bit frustrating and disappointing.

When puppies are trained to use a pee pad of any kind, a throw rug can be just too inviting at times. <grin>

I use the washable pee pads with my puppies and find that throw rugs and puppies just don't go together. If they aren't peeing on them, then they are chewing, scrunching, digging or using them to play tug of war!!! LOLOL

Chin up, Joe. Mugsy will get there. I remember being just absolutely certain one of the girls had the house training down pat and I was congratulating myself on a job well done, when they went and proved otherwise. I became cautiously optimistic the next time. They did get it though.
This is one of those instances when patience is a virtue.

I agree that any throw rug is very inviting for a puppy - especially one who's entering adolescence. Just go back to basics...says the wise one who had to do a major carpet cleaning under the dining room table yesterday. Someone pees, another marks. Old guy has a woopsie, someone marks. You get the picture.

Joe, I feel your pain. The moment I congratulated myself about my perfectly house-trained dog, he decided to prove me otherwise BAD TIME, LOL. But we're back on track and thanks to the forum I KNEW this could happen and was able to suck it up (literally) and get back to basics for a few days.

"Accidents do happen"...it's not only a maxim, but it's a true-life reality!

I kind of laugh at myself, though, because when Molly has an accident (or really, when I'm too distracted and miss her "message" ), my first reaction is to beat up on myself.

That little fuzz-ball is G-O-O-D! She gets ME to take the rap! She's a pro! And she CAN get by on CUTE!

Mugsy, too! Just keep enjoying that little guy!

Joe, we had a harder time with Cash than with Jasper. He loved our dining room rug--- out of the way hidden by chair legs. What we did--is we removed all the chairs for a while and sat down on the rug and played and treated right where he liked to go. This now became cemented in his head as a "living area" not a place to pee. It's worth a try. And feed him right there too.

Our boys are trained to go on pee pads too --they now mostly hold it and wait to go outside-- but they still use their room in an emergency. But there is only one place that they can go--- I don't know if you are putting pee pads all over the place or not-- but I think if you are trying to train Mugsy to go both inside and out it would be best to only have one place indoors. We also really focused on the right place indoors for a very long time before we bothered with outdoor training.

well, there are my words of wisdom for what ever it's worth.

Oh I remember those days of frustration, - Just when you think they got it - they prove ya wrong. With mine it was just a phase and gone and done with in a week and they were back to outside.

They really are very conditioned to pads as I just found out. My little foster Gigi came to us the day of her spay, so I put her in a crate with a peepee pad, just so if she bled on it , or spilled her water it would catch it. 2nd day here, she peed in her crate. I thought nothing of it. Next day I put the pad in under the water bowl so she wouldnt get the bed wet, and she Pooped in the crate!! Then it hit me, she was used to going on pads. I took it out, and she has been fine ever since!!

while housetraining on pee pads I had to remove all rugs from my home. It's been 6months and I finally put the kitchen rug back in last week. So far so good. It's definitely difficult for a puppy to learn the diff between a pee pad and a carpet when they are still learning the ropes. Plus once a scent is on the rug, they will keep going there.

Joe,
I finally put away all the throw rugs and probably won't bring them back for about a year. Lulu has been a real good girl lately. Just last week she pooped right outside the front door. Obviously she was trying to get inside to go in her regular place! Just kidding, she hasn't left us any presents inside for a while now.
I think it just takes a little time with these little babies.
