short or long coat

I was wondering how many of you keep your non-show havs in long coats? I've been keeping mine long since they were puppies because it looks so nice, but every summer they run around and get so messy...and in winter, they get so wet. I decided to get their coats cut...but they don't look like the dogs I know and love...they sort of look like poodles with straight hair!

I know it is easier for them...no more matts except in the face where I kept it long. I know they don't care...but I am having a hard time with this.

What do most people do? Long or short coats...or something in between?

Hi, we have short coats here most of the time. In the winter the snow sticks to them like velcro and in the summer we go for walks in the woods and one of them is always finding something to get into that makes them a mess. They like to roll on dead worms, duck poo and stuff like that.
It's just easier for me with three dogs.
Also Emma is prone to mats no matter what I do.
I know what you mean about the Poodle thing, I don't like it when someone asks me if they are Poodles! Then when I tell them they are Havanese, they look at me like I'm from another planet!

I have really thought about going short but everytime I get down to doing it I wimp out. I just have 2 going on 3 so I can keep up with it, anymore, I think someone would have to be cut!

I keep Stella in a short coat too. She gets so dirty the way it is that I can't imagine how bad it would be if her coat were long.

I keep Bogart and Brando in a short coat during the spring summer and let it grow longer in the winter.

Gryff has always been short, but I've been toying with growing it out.

I can really appreciate the long on everyone else's dogs. But, it's just not my thing. I love that forever puppy look
So we keep it pretty short and it's really easy to keep up with.

Milo's always been in full coat. I just love it and I love the way it looks as he sails over things and his hair flies right along with him. I've had some serious issues with matting since he went through the blowing coat stage, but it would take a lot for me to cut him. I think I'd cry.

I love the long coat, I think it depends on the coat type of the hav how long. Mari is in full coat because hers is very easy to keep and rarely mats but Blossom just got a hair cut because her coat is frizzy and very full, matting badly. The groomer thinned Blossom's coat and cut off the length to just 4 inches, she looks lovely. I couldn't bear to have it any shorter. Oh I found the most amazing shampoo & conditioner, Plush Puppy which takes the frizz away making it much easier to maintain the longer coat I prefer.

I think Sissy is the "in between" When she gets too long I have them scissor trim her some. I have had her short and just enjoy a little length on her. I don't really have a matting problem.
