New York Mag rates Havs as top City Dog "Hot Breed"

New York Magazine has an article on the best breeds for city life. Number one was mutts/mixed breeds. Number 2: The Havanese. Here's what they had to say:

(2.) HAVANESE
Pros: One of the hot breeds this season, these are playful, happy dogs.
Cons: Lot of grooming unless you shave them down, and recent litters appearing in city pet stores are showing “fear issues,” according to one trainer.

One can only imagine that litters in pet stores have fear issues. Hopefully the "hot breed" comment will bode well for the great breeders on this forum, and not so much for the pet stores.

When I was researching an article, I discovered that Havanese are the 6th most popular AKC registered breed in NYC. They are already in the pet stores, just like all the other poor little souls. Although I know many of us have gotten our first pets there. It's so important that we educate people as to the reason they need to get their dogs from a breeder that does health testing. The temperament problems, especially aggression, have been cropping up in Havanese due to back yard breeders and the puppy mills - just makes me so mad that people think they can make money breeding. Okay, off my soapbox.

I think that is VERY BAD news for the havanese breed myself......there's been alot of people hop on the hav breeding train already for the money....with no health testing or anything...it's sad for the breed.

So NYC has a lot of pet stores? We do not have any around here although I know that there are some in the state. Obviously education is a tool that decreases the dogs sold in pet stores.

Yes, lots of pet stores in NY state. I was in the city 2 weeks ago and went in a pet store. They had open top plexiglass cages. On the top shelf was the most adorable Hav, very active, and kept trying to jump out of the cage to play with me. It was very tempting and I can see why people buy from pet stores. I really had a hard time leaving that store. And, they wanted $2500. So, you really can't rationalize not getting one from a good breeder, when it will cost about the same. I think it's just the instant gratification that gets people to do this. Also, I don't think enough people are educated about puppy mills.

I too was in a NYC pet store last week that sold Havaneses and this lady was holding a really beautiful one and was seriously thinking about getting it. From the conversation I had with her it was obvious that she has been in the store the past couple of weeks looking at the same puppy. According to the salesman the puppy was 8 weeks old so it must've been taken from the dam when it was 6 weeks old the most. We talked about the breed and getting puppies from pet store and she knew about puppy mills, but she just couldn't get over the "cute puppy in the window" syndrome. And the store was asking $3000 for the pup.

Thank goodness we do not have this in our area. We do not have pet shops really, but away from here in bigger towns if there are live animals like cats and dogs, they are from the Animal Rescue League up for adoption....not for the pet shop profit. I like that.Too bad it wasn't like that nation-wide.

This is very true and it drives me crazy that these types of articles are written. It is what makes the buying public go crazy over a particular breed, and what helps keep puppy mills in business. Pet stores are the WORST place to get a dog from.
