May 17 Memorial for Sue Nelson, Havanese Mentor and Friend

Permission to Crosspost by Linda Spencer:

Please join us for a Saturday in May to remember the joy we all had in knowing Sue Nelson.

This will be a casual event with you and your dogs and your memories of Sue. Details are included below and in the attachment.

There will be lunch, followed by a clicker class and a dancing with your dogs demonstration.

We'd like you to bring your photos and other memories of Sue and her dogs to participate in a "Walk of Fame", a tribute path around our event site. Contact Fredith Holt ([email protected]) for more information on this part of the event).

We'll be serving hamburgers and hot dogs and we'd like to ask you to bring side dishes and/or desserts on a pot luck basis. We'll supply the beverages.

RSVP to Linda Strike ([email protected] or [email protected]) if you plan to attend. We need to know how many are planning to join us!!

See you on the 17th of May!!

havanese dancing

Sue's dogs not only dance, they do agility, ride skateboards, rally obedience, obedience, confirmation...to name a few. She was a trainer extraordinaire. She used clicker as a reinforcement...but practice practice practice and lots of praise and treats.

See you there.

I just have to dig up all my photos for the day.

Yesterday, I attended Memorial and Tribute. It was very lovely. There were some tables set out that really showed how dedicated she was to her dogs, her students, and the havanese community. I missed the memorial service (Jim let dasher play in the mud and traffic but I was able to eventually get there.

I was also able to meet Judy- finally! She has the most adorable cream little girl! Such a sweet face. I also got to meet Linda! It was great meeting the two of you and I hope we can do a playdate sometime! Linda's dogs are also adorable. Riki was so cute though. They had a clicker seminar since Sue clicker trained her dogs and Riki wanted to be there training the entire time. Since it was 101F when I got back to my car, it was kind of hard to concentrate. Dasher was so cute, I didn't realize I was sitting in the sun, until I look back and he walked over into a shadow a tree.

I was also able to see the rescue quilt in person which was lovely. I have never seen a Havanese Quilt in person!

I barely took photos- I had Dasher and I was concentrating on socializing him and making sure he drank enough water since it was so warm- but here are a few!

some more...

The clicker trainer was great to listen to. She really reminded me how important with training it is to ask our dogs to think and how much more into it they become. She had an adorable border collie who was very intelligent (I had to remind myself you have to deal with that crazy energy all the time!)

thanks for the photos

I am usually the one behind the camera...so it was nice to have some taken of us! I am still so in LOVE with your puppy.

The best part of yesterday in addition to honoring Sue was to meet the forum folks. I only wish we could have more puppy and dog get togethers. We were so fortunate to have been able to go to Sue's weekly or bi-weekly for years for training and socializing...dogs and people.

Hopefully it raised awareness for connection...and for the rescue quilt.

David, Sue's husband held it together...it is my hope that Sue felt in life how much she was appreciated. I have never known anyone so giving of time for the love of the dogs.

thank you to all who made this happen...

I'd like to thank all of the people who worked so hard to make the
memorial event for Sue Nelson a success. For those of you across the
nation who could not be there, your kind thoughts were felt in
spirit. David Nelson was there with their four dogs as well as
friends and supporters from far away as well as those who live
locally. Sue's kindness and experience for our breed touched
many...both dogs and people alike. We didn't just get a dog...we got
a lifestyle.

There was a lovely photograph of Sue with each of her five dogs. We
were given plants to honor her life and to remember her at home. We
made flags that were hung all around our area to honor our memories,
as well as bringing photographs of Sue with her dogs and ours. We
each held a balloon while folks remembered her with memories and good
times. We were given treats, a special clicker and a training stick
for the special doggy freestyle and clicker training class. We were
able to view for the first time the HRI 2008 Quilt dedicated to Sue.

The food was delightful, the whole place looked inviting with a huge
area for the dogs to run free and they sure had a blast. The dogs
were able to socialize while we all talked of of our good times with
Sue and all that she had done for us. I can only tell you that we
chatted through email regularly as well as our weekly classes. From
the word at the memorial, Sue was very busy as it seems she was in
regular contact with everyone.

There are so many people who worked very hard to make this day a
success. It is my hope that I have not forgotten anyone, and if I
have, my sincere apologies. We will be posting photographs soon.

For those who worked so hard to make this a success, I sincerely
thank all of you with much appreciation. I'm sure that Sue would
have been more than proud, I know that David was.

Steering Committee headed by Linda Strike, Steering Committee Chair:

Sharon Kruger (Clickers, Registration, program, welcome table)
Fredith Holt (Walk of Fame)
Carole Shea (Food Coordinator)

And

Debbie Smith
Ommy Westlake
John Oakes
Jim McClain
Wendell Strike
Dave Nelson
Gene Tavris

and many many more who came, brought food items and good feelings.

I'm sure I have missed some important aspects of the day. I'm a
little overcome with emotion for all that I experienced.
