Which books are best

Hi:

I'll be bringing home Izzy in 4 weeks. I need to start getting prepared. Does anyone have suggestions on good books to get? I'm starting to get nervous!

P.S. What about a doggie door - good or bad idea???

Thanks
Jane in Michigan

Definitely "Havanese" by Diane Klumb. Lots of good breed specific advice to help you understand what is normal and what to look for healthwise. You'll have a blast.

Doggie

The Havanese by Diane Klumb, How to Raise a puppy you can live with and Puppies for dummies.

My breeder trains her puppies using doggie door. We installed a doggie door wall unit which connects the inside ex-pen to the outside covered ex-pen which is is located on our deck. Benji and Lizzie both caught on the idea. They both were 13 weeks when we got them and never had any problems. The only draw back of doggie door is if your puppy loves to romp outside, you may not have control over his comings and goings into the yard. You may install addtional ex-pen and limit their area in the back yard.

You can see the picture of the set up we used to have. The white frame in the back is the doggie door. I used to place the piddle pads onto the outside ex-pen which Benji accessed for his business. The indoor expen on the other side of the wall had his crate, water and food bowl. Until he was completely reliable we kept him in the ex-pen. He was house broken by 6 months.

Now we have extended our deck and the entire ex-pen sits on the deck.

Best, Poornima

Oh yes a doggie door is a great idea. Have had one for years and think they are the best. Look for the bell ringing potty training threads. That is one trick you will be so grateful you taught your little one. I'm always envious of those that have such clever Havs.

And Poornima, I'll say it again, your DH is so clever to have built such a wonderful outside potty area and safe play pen.

Thanks, Lisa! DH even built portable wooden steps for the platform so that when we opened the door of the outdoor expen, Benji could run in the backyard. The set up was very convenient. But it is even niceer that we have extended the deck and the outdoor ex-pen opens onto the big deck.

Best, Poornima

i agree...although diane klumb is very controversial. i didn't know this and made the mistake of waving her book around at an open house for havanese. posh's breeder explained the controversy when i went to pick her up. ooops.

great book and diane has a great "voice."

I also like the "havanese: a complete and reliable handbook" by dorothy goodale- she is the woman who brought the breed to the US. Plus great pictures are a plus

I also liked the Diane Klumb book-- and house training for dummies is an essential.
