recognizing dogs in pictures?

Do you think Dogs can recognize still pictures of dogs? I ask this because the other day, My DH brought up one of his paintings he is getting ready for his show. It is a very big, kind of bizarre painting of Micky Mouse taming a vicious German shepherd (make of that what you will.) So Jasper was looking at it, backed up, hedged closer- ran back-- barked, and finally got close enough to sniff and then it was over-- but for five minutes he was sizing up the attack dog not looking at Mickey.. but the dog. What do you think? I know we have talked about how our havs react to dogs on TV-- but what about still pictures? Any stories?

I don't know about pictures, but whenever my friend's Maltese sees an animal that resembles a dog on TV, he will bark and growl and it. As soon as the animal is gone, say a commercial comes on, he's quite. But as soon as the animal is shown again "woof woof".

Soooooo who really knows what they see.

Sissy use to growl at herself in the mirror when she was a puppy.

I have showed her hav forum fur babies and I think she does recognize them as being dogs. She loves the videos.

My b/f's dog usually ignores my computer, but I had a desktop image of a dog once and he spotted it across the room (i was on the bed) and he ran up to it, touched his nose to it, noticed it wasn't real and then left. So, I think they can.

I think they can! Mine bark at the TV all the time. The funniest thing was when Tito saw his reflection in the mirror and went up, licked it, and then walked off. Clown.
