HELP with HAV #2

We have Otto, who will be 1 year old on May 17th. On Friday night we got Emme, who is 11 weeks and 3 days old. She is (well...was) the sweetest little thing and Otto sometimes has a sweet side too. Her and Otto seem to get along most of the time but he is so much bigger than her at his weight of 14.8 lbs and she at her measly 4.8. So...some questions...
-Can HAV #2 be negatively swayed by HAV #1 (will the bad behaviors and roughness of Otto rub off onto Emme, she seems to be a bit more into nipping as the days go on)?
-When will they co-exist peacefully??
-How rough is too rough when letting them play? We do watch VERY closely and supervise diligently but unless she whines should we assume things are okay?

I don't know about the cohabitation...but as far as rough play goes, that is how pups learn to curtail their biting, into mouthing. It's natural dog behavior for pups to bite. The older dogs usually take it as part of play, until the pup goes just a bit too far, and then the pup will get a chomp from the older dog. That's when you might hear the yips from Emme. Unless it is constant aggressive behavior from Otto, they are most likely playing and roughhousing. If they do that for a while and then you hear Emme yip, don't get mad at Otto - he's just doing his big brother duty and would get confused by the commotion.

However, if Otto is consistently biting and growling, and breaking skin on Emme, that is aggressive behavior that cannot be tolerated and needs to be nipped in the bud. Emme may growl during play - again she is learning. But usually the older dog won't growl.

My Lola has loved playing with big dogs since she was 4 lbs. Her friend Lefty taught her not to bite, and they survived it all as good buddies. Lola shows no fear for the biggest dogs and people, so Lefty must have done his job well.

I will answer your questions only if you tell us if Otto was really flying down those stairs in your house or if it was photo-shopped!!! I just must know the answer.

actually I felt the same thing when we brought Cash home--but they worked it out-- like you, we interrupted when either one of them squeeled, which is usually the older dog-- those puppy teeth are sharp. I got them used to the term "hey, play nice" as I broke them up and made them sit. Of course Emme still needs to learn not to use her teeth, And Otto can help you teach her that through play.

You need to post some pictures!!!

Welcome to you all, including your new little baby. I have three and each tim,e I brought a new baby home, I found that the older one, usually tried to be the alpha. The fighting, nipping, and growling is just an attempt for one to establish their position. I always allowed it, but making sure that no one was breaking skin or seriously injured. Usually they worked it out themselves. My younger ones, thankfully did not adapt to my olders lack of confidence, and barking tendancies. I think you just need to give it time, and Emme will establish her place with Otto, whether she is the alpha, or he!! In my house my first female, and oldest is the alpha, the second oldest, female, is the omega. And third, a boy is in the middle. They will work it out amongst themselves. YOur only involvement is to keep them safe!!
Enjoy, it is really fun to see relationships develop!!

A quick note...yes Otto did really fly down those stairs...we have it on video too!!

Well, we'll be patient with them. We just don't know if we should continue intervene or let them work it out. It is just that she is so small right now. He also seems to hump her a lot, eventhough he is neutered. We always pull him off of her but when that happens.

If you're not sure things are ok, the test is to separate them and then see if they both get right back together! If one is unhappy with the "play" they won't be in a big hurry to get back into it.

I think the humping is just letting her know who's boss. Milo is doing it to Bailey now too and Bailey is only 9 weeks old and also 4.8 lbs. They too play rough and it sometimes scares me but they both seem to love it so I try to back off (when I can).

Your new little one is so cute. Enjoy her.

They will get along! Just be patient. Carmen humps Tito all day long. I will laugh so hard when he gets big enough to tackle her - serves her right the big bully!
