Who watches your "kids" when you go on vacation???

Just wondering what you do when you can't bring your pups along on vacation. I have used "Best Friends Pet Care" (a national chain) in the past. My dogs stay in a private villa with 24 hr. Animal Planet, toddler bed, play times, etc. It gets pretty expensive with all the extras, but it beats a wire crate!

As nice as it is, they don't get outside for walks or fresh air, and that leaves me feeling terribly guilty. I avoid going away without them for this very reason, but it really isn't fair to my husband.

I'd prefer that they be able to stay in our home or stay with someone who I can really trust. Can anyone offer a recommendation of a good sitter in the Philadelphia area, or any general ideas?

Thanks a million!!!!!

Heather, I will send you a pm with some information. I use my breeder and she doesn't usually take other dogs besides her own, but she has been known to make an exception.

Vacation

My husband and daughter have been to Hawaii for two weeks each time this year and last year. I stayed home. I could use our wonderful local Havananny, but I also have a cat, fish, hamster, and millipede. The cost of a housesitter is pretty high here in Southern California.

I was lucky before that I had a friend who had a havanese locally and we would trade back and forth. But she has moved to Maryland, sigh. Many people have offered to stay with the dogs...but they don't know how to groom them well. Two weeks of an uncombed dog wouldn't be pretty!

My breeder is in Arizona...sigh.

I'm curious as to what you folks do.

Linda, why did I think you were in Florida. I see you are down south....
The girls' breeder will dog sit her pups but we have yet to take her up on it. We haven't had a need for a sitter as yet because we try to vacation where the girls can go. We do have wonderful neighbors who care for our cat and birds and would take excellent care of the girls if we left them. I just have a thing about them being left alone at night. I too will be interested to hear what others say.

i rarely leave town...

but i have some friends with children who used to watch sugar if i needed. they loved her and the kids called her 'their dog'.
since getting mugsy, i have had numerous offers to watch him and a few 'offers' for me to hit the road, get outta town!

but part of my holiday has always been spending some quality time with my pups.

We live in Redondo Beach

We live in the land of big houses with no yards! Close to the beach where we walk all the time. California has many laws against dogs in parks or beaches. In our town, dogs are not allowed in any parks...so we go to Torrance or Hermosa. Redondo and Manhattan Beach ridiculous, considering that no one has land. It is because so many do not scoop poop!

I have always had someone come in to pet sit. I am considering doggie day care one day a week to relieve my neighbor who has been graciously watching Suzy when I work. If the doggie day care works out they have overnight care as well. I have not kenneled a dog in years, we had two bad experiences and decided it was not worth the worry and after effects.

I consider myself extremely lucky, my parents house is Sierra's 2nd home!

And yes, after 2 weeks, it takes me several hours spread over 3 days to get her coat back fully up to standard, however, in return she is completely spoiled with love, and she feels completely at home, she hardly misses us *grins*

This year, no holiday for us, we rennovated the bathroom.... Our big wish is to go to Canada, Rocky Mountains....

I guess I am a person who'd rather not go on Holiday than have Sierra spent her time with total strangers, no matter how luxurious the place would be....

Suzanne and her Sparkling Sierra, godmother to Dinky (*) and Baileys!

I either have my niece or my parents come and stay here and I have used one of my breeders also~
When my parents watch them, I do come home to messy dogs. But I feel that is a SMALL price to pay for letting them stay in the comfort of their own home while we are gone!
