What shots to get?

Ok, so at Beamers vet check last week he got the normal vaccinations without Rabbies and Bordetella. Now they called me to say he needs Rabbies and Bordetella?? Should I go ahead and get these shots for Beamer?

Thanks,
Ryan

Ryan, the Rabies he needs for sure, at least it's mandatory here in New York. After this it's after 3 years. The Bordetella I'm not sure about... it's usually a good precautionary one as kennel cough is pretty spread out. Can you get titers for it to check if he's still immune?

Ryan, well I would either find another vet (what do TITERS have to do with ethics???) or I would just give him the booster. Kubrick has had kennel cough and it took him MONTHS to get over it.

Don't you have to only worry about kennel cough if your dog goes to a kennel or is housed somewhere? For the most part my guys only come in contact with dogs at the park a few times a week. So is it really necessary?

Rabies, I think you need by law here to. I think after this shot Ryan, you will not need one for 2yrs. I think that's how Smith does it.

Daniel, kennel cough can be caught anywhere, not just in kennels or when your dog is being housed. Kubrick goes to the dog park and out in the street. Just by breathing out onto another dog, your dog can catch it. Kennel cough is basically a cold. Just like you can catch a cold from a person sitting next to you on the bus, the dog can catch a cold just by sniffing another dog and having the other dog breathe onto it.

Although it's not necessary to take the shot, I know that Kubrick did have kennel cough which he caught before his shot (he was not in a kennel nor was he being housed - he got it from the street) and it really was a complete pain to get rid of. It took forever. If you don't mind listening to the coughing and the runny nose for that long, then it does go away on its own eventually, though most vets prescribe an antibiotic to help the process along... plus during that time, if you're a responsible owner you shouldn't take your dog outside as he can give it to other dogs. Which can be a pain in and of itself.

*** Oh brother! What the heck ??!! Since Beamer is just one year old, it's a little soon for titers I think... not sure.....

Here, the rabies shot is good for 3 yrs. and so Ricky didn't get it last fall. He was 15 mths. old at the time. Like Daniel said, Bordatella might be required by some dog schools (agility, obedience, etc... ), almost all kennels and some groomers. My friend in Sudbury said that all PetSmarts across Canada require bordatella and some even ask for proof.

After Ricky's episode 4 days after his vaccines last fall (and we are still not out of the woods!), I am very hesitant to get Sammy's shots done and he was due last month. I'm scared. I am not giving Lepto nor Rabies for sure. Parvo, I'm not sure yet. I seriously think we over vaccinate our dogs and I'm going to only give it to them every few years and only if titers show they are needed.

Lina, kennel cough is a pain. I think it's worth getting that too. They give the dog drops in the nose so it's not as invasive as a needle and it seems pretty harmless.

Most kennels, some groomers too (I think) ask for proof of Bortedella. It's intranasel and needs to be renewed every six months. I made sure Rufus had his as a pup since we were going to be active in puppy classes, but I didn't renew it at 6 months. We don't go to dog parks, dog shows and groomers and such so his exposure is less than it would be for some. I think you can get a shot at any time and need to have one at least 4-7 days prior to boarding your dog in a kennel for protection.

Christy, my vet told me that Bordatella is only once a year not every six months... I wonder if there are different strengths or something?
