Unhappy Choking on hair

Benji and Lizzie play rough. They pull and chew on each other's coats. I sometimes find both choking on the hair stuck in their mouths. When I brush them, little chewed up tangle balls and clumps of hair come out. It is scary to watch them have heaves or see them cough to get the stuck hairball out.

Has anyone come across this issue? I was wondering if I should trim their coats short but I really love their longish puppy coats.

Best, Poornima

Kohl had one of Kona's hair balls in his mouth yesterday during the WRESTLE MANIA they had. I was like..... oh.. just like a cat!!! hahahaha. don't know about trimming their hair. I actually thought about that for Kona (Kohl's hair isn't long enough) but not sure if that would solve it. Hope someone has some good advise! Guess we'll have to get some CAT HAIRBALL FORMULA! hahah (only joking)

Poornima,

Scout gets a lot of hair in his mouth too - I open his mouth wide and do a finger sweep when I hear him making a weird coughing or hacking sound. I have always (so far!) been able to grab hold of a wad of slimy hair to pull it out. Ick.

I do finger sweeps too and it helps get the hair. I wish there was a way to get them to play without eating hair.

My boys do this also, one will stop in mid play and give out a cough or two then jump back in on the fun.

Jan you are going to have a lot of coat chewing when Boomer get's home, he is going to do a number on Tessa's coat. Those baby teeth are the worst, but it is so fun to watch them play you totaly forget about them looking perfect.

I haven't had choking from hair balls that I know of, but they really do a number on each other's coats. Doc has very short muzzle hair now and it's kind of thin. One thing Doc does is grab the pile of hair that I get when I groom Izzy....then I have to do the finger sweep to get the wad out of his mouth! Now why do they find that appetizing?????

I'm surprised McKenna has any hair left on her tail as that's where Sedona grabs and pulls during play. I find long clumps of white tail hair on my carpet. In my house, hair is a given, what with the clumps of Hav hair and the cat hair. My vacuum gets a workout. I haven't noticed them coughing up hairballs or if they have, I've blamed it on the cat! As long as they are able to cough up what they've ingested, I wouldn't worry. It's when it doesn't come up that there might be a problem.

Just yesterday, after having to cut Quincy's coat------I saw Vinnie grab Quincy by his hair on his back and pull a big wad out! This was a giant piece! I was livid! Guess what Quincy did??? He just stood there! Wouldn't you think that would hurt? Not Quincy------he just stood there while Vinnie did it! Vinnie then had it stuck on his tongue....darn dog----I didn't help him get it off either---I figured if he was dumb enough to pull out Quincy's hair, then let him gag on it! (Of course he didn't--and was scolded)but I'm thinking now,Quince will never have a nice long coat at this rate!
