LIST MATES FROM PLACES I KNOW

Taking time to scroll through some of the old threads (and more recent ones) I notice we have some folks from Long Island. I moved to KY from Long Island in 2006. I grew up in New Hyde Park and moved to West Babylon in 1979 when I was married (and subsequently divorced but kept the house). My graduate degree is from LIU/CWPost. My Mom and sister still live in New Hyde Park. I like KY, dont get me wrong. But I was recruited here for a job that turned out to be a DISASTER and have been out of work since Feb. Its been very heartbreaking and scary because I just bought a house! I miss my family and friends in NY. I even miss the stupid Long Island Expressway. I miss my vet in Farmingville. (although I do have an excellent vet down here its hard to replace a 20+ year relationship with my vet in Farmingville) I showed at Westminster in 2007 but due to the job loss could not make it for 2008.

I also noticed we have listmates in Quebec! Every year for well over 10 years I attended dog shows in Thetford Mines (about 90 min or so east of Montreal)I have also attended show in Trois Riveres and Montreal. I loved showing In Canada and am so very sad I probably will not get to do it any longer. Two of my pulik came from near Toronta (Ontario) although I have never been there. I have been to the eastern Canadian provinces (Newfoundland and New Brunswick)

Oh enough of a walk down memory lane...now I am crying.

My Havanese experience goes like this. I fell in love with the breed and did some research, way before I found the forum. I wasn't as smart about testing, etc. I found Kodi, the white looking one in my avatar, on Nextdaypets.com and fell in love. I called the "breeder" and we hit it off right away. She had me fill out a questionnaire, she called my vet for a reference, etc. We drove to Salem, MA to get him. When I got his pedigree from AKC, I saw that his sire was out of Peekaboo Havanese. He has a pretty good pedigree. I think they really wanted to breed Havs, but Kodi's dam only had one litter and was 3-1/2 when they were born. They decided not to breed her anymore. They kept one female, but then the breeder got pregnant and I think it was just too much. Their kennel name was Traveltime.

Shelby, my b/w little girl was sort of a surprise from my DH. He found an ad in the paper, and I didn't have the heart to disappoint him (or say no to getting another Hav). The call themselves NY Havanese.

I have been very lucky so far. They are happy and healthy dogs. I have much more knowledge now thanks to this forum. If I ever get another, I would do it the right way, even though I had a vet tell me it didn't matter where I got a dog, because there are can be no 100% guarantee that a dog is going to be healthy just because it comes from a breeder. He was not my vet, thank goodness.

Sorry I went on so long.

Well since havanese have become so popular "breeders" pop up out of the woodwork. Although they are a healthy breed all in all there is some suspicious stuff in the back ground of some dogs that have Hungarian imported relatives. We all learn as we go along.

When I lived in NY I belonged to the Greater NY Hav club and we had a Halloween party every year. I would bring Aretha into Manhattan on the LIRR and then take the subway downtown. Once in awhile we would drive in depending on the number of dogs that I was taking. We always had sunch a good time. I will try and find a picture of Aretha in costume and post it. (and we all know how well I am dong with pictures

Love that costume, so cute. This past October, Laurie had a playdate and we had a costume party. There are pictures somewhere on the forum, but I couldn't find them.

I belong to GNYHC but haven't gone to many meetings. I did go to the Bmatch and meeting the weekend of Westminster this Feb. I hope I can attend more of their functions soon.

Aw Abbe, I was in New Hyde Park today. My DILs parents live there too. If you miss it so much (and you're not alone BTW, so many people tell me how much they miss Long Island), why not come back.

We have a growing contingent of hav owners here. It's great.

Geri I sold my home when I moved to KY. I could never afford to live there again. On Long Island to own a home you need a LOT of money...2 salaries minimum. I could never rent with the number of animals I have not to mention that finding a place to rent w/animals is impossible on Long Island. I could only come back and live with my mother or sister if I got rid of most of my animals. That is not an option.

Where in NHP do your DIL's family live? Yes when I left NY there was a growing number of havanese folks on LI. Where do you live?
