We both changed jobs at the same time about two years ago . . . I moved on again in December and I love my present job but as you know a new commitment mean lots of working hours. Then my father-in-law was sick . . . then there was lots of other stuff that occupied my fall and winter (long story I will share at some point) but the bottom line was that there were lots of months where I was not being very good when it came to grooming. Phoebe and Otto are fairly easy but Javi has that cottony coat that can make you crazy. I highly suggest some liquid refreshment, the cheapest baby powder you can find and a rotating tooth comb. Do not do this job while sitting in a black leather chair in your family room . . . you will have to make a major investment in leather cleaner as the chair will have a shiny white sheen forever.
It was long and tedious but I didn't have to cut out a single mat - My dogs have never been cut or trimmed but I am not sure that you would say they were in show coat either. They play pretty rough so I do find tufts of fur around the house.
A couple of other products that I have used are Cowboy Magic (gel-like substance that is pretty messy but works pretty well) - do not use with baby powder or you will have a giant grimy mess on your hands. Also Tropiclean makes a product called D-mat - not bad either. Bottom line is that I have found nothing that works better than the baby powder and it is cheap and they smell good too.
Good luck with the project - I would help if I was closer (It would give me a chance to show off my grooming apron that I won at the East Coast play date).
