To shave or no to shave..that is the question

I have not kept after Aretha's coat. Simple and true it is my fault. The reason lie mostly in my very difficult winter and spring and joblessness. When you are overwhelmed with depressing issues sometimes you work on sheer survival instinct. But some important things when in a better mind frame are overlooked. To those who keep their havanese in full coat you know that ignoring for a long period of time is a disaster. So when I tried to get started bringing her coat back into condition I realized it was not a one "man" job as she is not Ms.Co-operation when trying to seperate and comb out mats. So what to do? Shaving her down would mean a 2 year wait to come back into specials coat. I have no havanese friends near by to help me work on her. So, today one of the pulik had an appointment to be shaved down. She is a retired CH. I thought I would try my vet's groomer. She did an really nice job. I had Aretha with me because she needed her rabies shot. The groomer took a look at her and agreed she was a MESS but she thinks she can get her in decent condition with a minimum of coat loss so that she would only need the rest of the year to get back into condition. She worked on her for just a few moments and got a whole bunch of sticky stuff out of her beard. So she has an appointment in 2 weeks with this groomer. In the mean time I will start working on areas that she will let me mess with and hopefully by the beginning of next year (with my diligence in keeping up with her coat) she might be ready to be shown again.

I had tried to cord her after her first litter and it wasnt a pretty sight. So I shaved her down in the fall of 05 and figured she would be back in coat by the following summer. Wrong. She was not competitive again until the spring of 07.

Shall keep my fingers crossed.

Good luck! Keeping fingers crossed too. I just cut Kona last night to his summer cut. I was sooooooo nervous, but I think he's very cute cut down. I cut him to a 3" and was too scared to go any shorter. I left his face and ears and some on the feet a 5".

I keep Desilu shaved as I'm a lazy groomer. He doesn't seem to mind.

I keep Stella in a puppy cut. Much easier to deal with. She goes to the groomer once a week but I still have to brush her or she mats up.

I am glad you found a groomer who will work with you on the show coat! It is a scary prospect having to bring that thing all the way around. I am dreading Tito's blowing coat phase and pray I wont kill his hair because he still needs to finish! It will turn out ok, and if you are super patient and diligent she will be gorgeous!

Its still not certain what the end result will be but its got to be better then taking her all the way down. Must be diligent...I am so easily distracted these days.

Just bust out a margarita or two while you are doing it. It helps.

Abbe,
You hang in there! I bet you can get it---we will be here cheering you on! Just do alittle at a time, when you are both relaxed. I think Kimberly said once to rub alittle baby powder or baking soda(you should ask her)into the matt and it helps untangle it.

If she thinks she can do it, I would probably let her give it a shot. we shaved Wesley about a month ago and I haven't noticed a difference yet. I even let them trim the top this time. NEVER AGAIN! It's going to be the same as the last time, it took FOREVER to grow out and I hate it. i love the short body now that it's getting warmer. But I want my sheepdog face back.
Just my 2 cents, give her a chance, worst case senario, you have to shave her after that.
Good Luck!

Hi Abbe,

We both changed jobs at the same time about two years ago . . . I moved on again in December and I love my present job but as you know a new commitment mean lots of working hours. Then my father-in-law was sick . . . then there was lots of other stuff that occupied my fall and winter (long story I will share at some point) but the bottom line was that there were lots of months where I was not being very good when it came to grooming. Phoebe and Otto are fairly easy but Javi has that cottony coat that can make you crazy. I highly suggest some liquid refreshment, the cheapest baby powder you can find and a rotating tooth comb. Do not do this job while sitting in a black leather chair in your family room . . . you will have to make a major investment in leather cleaner as the chair will have a shiny white sheen forever.

It was long and tedious but I didn't have to cut out a single mat - My dogs have never been cut or trimmed but I am not sure that you would say they were in show coat either. They play pretty rough so I do find tufts of fur around the house.

A couple of other products that I have used are Cowboy Magic (gel-like substance that is pretty messy but works pretty well) - do not use with baby powder or you will have a giant grimy mess on your hands. Also Tropiclean makes a product called D-mat - not bad either. Bottom line is that I have found nothing that works better than the baby powder and it is cheap and they smell good too.

Good luck with the project - I would help if I was closer (It would give me a chance to show off my grooming apron that I won at the East Coast play date).

Arlene
