You guys are SO thoughtful....

I have just been busy with "spring" stuff... We have been in the midst of having our fence rebuilt, which has been a bit stressful, as our one neighbor was going balistic over a few inches that had been a long established fence line which a former neighbor established. The maddening thing is that this neighbor has nothing but piles of trash on the other side of our fence and because he was mad had previously poured asphalt all around our fence posts, making it impossible to remove them so we could re-adjust the few inches they were wanting back for all of their junk!

To make matters worse, we had really hot weather when the fence was built and it SHRUNK the boards, leaving 1/2 gaps all the way down the fence line. Now, the privacy fence that we wanted to block out all of the trash from two neighbors is totally visable from our back yard...UGH!! We have been in a battle with the builder and have finally come to an agreement where he will add strips of wood over the top of the gaps..

Ok..so that was one recent headache. Another was that the new fence also left gaps at the bottom (due to the ground being uneven). This worried me as we have a wooded area behind us. Well, I decided to put the Hav's on their leashes at night just in case a skunk got into the yard. Bingo! 4am this morning when I was letting them out, Sophie locked eyes on a skunk in the far corner of the yard! I have to say I was caught off guard and dropped Gabriel's leash!!!! Thankfully he didn't bolt, as he was unsure as to what was going on. I ended up with a scraped up hand diving for the leash.

All of Sophie's barking made the skunk run across the yard with it's tail straight up in the air and disapear around the corner of the house, which is also fenced. I told my DH this morning that it was his job to investigate. Thankfully the skunk didn't spray and was able to leave...

I think I was meant to be a "MURPH" ...

awwww Diane!!! I am so sorry for your woes!!! But nice to have you and your sense of humor back. Is there any recall with the fence company about the gaps?

Missy, we knew that wood does shrink over time, but what I found out by calling different fencing companies is that the high temperature speeded the process up. They also said that 1/2 inch was a bit much and in the end the contractor had to agree. In the long run it actually worked out in our favor, as there would have eventually been gaps in the wood.

Marj...several years ago a skunk got into our back yard and fully sprayed both of our Aussies! My DH had left the door open at which point they both dashed in right past him and jumped on our bed where I was asleep! The horrible smell jolted me awake only to find they were both madly rolling all over our comforter trying in vain to get the stink off!!

It was a really hot night out and we had no choice but to put them both in the gargage for the night. The smell was SO AWFUL!!!! We had never smelled a skunk spray at such close range...there is just no describing it! We couldn't even sleep, as there was no escaping the odor! It took months before the smell left the house and several dog baths (NOTHING worked!) to remove the odor.

My friend had a dog who was barking when it was sprayed and she had to hospitalize her as she ingested the spray. She said her dog's pores literally reeked out the smell of skunk for months.. UGH!

Diane - good to see you back. Sounds like the fence issue worked out okay. But I can't imagine having skunk spray on my bed. Your poor Aussies. Your poor house. Thank goodness you didn't have another episode and you had your pups on leashes on the chance there would be SKUNKS.

That sounds dreadful, Diane! I know the smell can stay in the house for months, and even worse when the dogs get wet. UGH ! I bought some 'Miracle' stuff just in case, but hopefully I'll never have to use it!
