Agility? Is one year too old?

I had Stella at the vet yesterday and he remarked that with the way she can jump, she'd be great at agility. I didn't know that we even had a club here but he assured me there was. Seems his wife runs their three dogs in it and there's going to be a meet here this weekend. I'm very interested and I plan to go to see what it's all about.
Soooo... Stella is one year old. Is she too old to learn this? She still does not walk very well on a leash and isn't the best at minding. She does sit and potty on commmand, let's me brush her teeth daily, knows the word no and no barking. So, she is trainable. Do you think she's too old to start this now?

No way! Dora didn't start till 18 months and Belle not till 3 years old! She is DEFINITELY NOT too old! To be honest, I am not sure if there is such a thing!

I agree, she is not too old. I started with Riley when he was around 19 months old. They really do enjoy it, even if you do not plan to compete it is a lot of fun.

Luigi never saw agility equipment until he was 18 months old. He's got championships in 3 different agility venues now. Nope, never too old to start.

Actually, my first breeder's contract stated that I couldn't start my Havanese in agility until he was at least 18 months and preferably 24 since their growth plates don't close until then and this way you can prevent injuries better. I believe AKC has an agility age minimum of at least 18 months, but I may be wrong.

Training for agility and competing at height in agility are completely different issues though. Yes, the agility venues have minimum ages for competion (ranging from 6 months to 18 months). But there is no reason not to start training earlier (as long as you are working with someone who knows how to train properly). Desilu was doing teeters (a board on the ground over a piece of 1 inch PVC) at 8 weeks old and weaves (running between the poles with them spread 12 inches apart) at 10 weeks. But he didn't start jumping his competition height (12 inches) until he was 18 months old and had been cleared by the vet.

Yep I agree with everyone else. Not too old! Posh and I have a blast together in agility, it's great fun! Also we are now impressing everyone with her ability to jump over my legs "jump" and through my legs "tunnel." David Letterman here we come!
