Angry raining on my parade...

So I just need to vent. I have been researching and talking about getting a puppy for months. So when i put a deposit down on Natasha, i was sooo excited. I'm afraid not everyone shares my excitment. Its not just one person either and they are all dog owners. Am i missing something? I had dogs all my life minus the last 6 years. When my sister and I moved on, she took our lab/pit mix; Yagers. We rescued her from a kill shelter. I'm not sure if the negativity is because i'm buying from a breeder and not going to a shelter or if they don't think i'm capable of being a good dog mommy because I have a four year old and an 8 month. One of the main reasons i would like a puppy is because i need to train the puppy to be kind to the children and vice versa. My hubby and I are home all day, every day. The puppy will probably want us to go away! ha ha My son has allergies and we wanted a dog that we could include in family activities so i am confident the Havanese it that breed. What is going on?????

Banchy, sometimes it can be very difficult to get a Havanese puppy - their litters can be on the small side and good breeders can have long waiting lists. Also some are not keen on placing smaller dogs with children. So you'll just have to widen your net in your search for the right breeder - don't lower your standards. One approach to try is to have your four year old attend a dog show with you and see how she behaves around the Havanese and you can get feedback from exhibitors and breeders that are attending the show.

If you are referring to friend's negativity about going through a breeder, just explain that health testing and a reliable temperament are very important to you. You've done your fair share of "rescue."

So who are the people giving you a hard time? The breeder or family/friends? I'm confused!

I think an occasional venting is good for the soul. It sounds like you've been very thoughtful in your decision, and I think its wonderful that Natasha will be going to such a good home with people there all the time. The forum is a great place for advice on dealing with children and puppies together. Congratulations!

It is always good to talk to people about their thoughts to make sure you are prepared. I talked with a maltese breeder who won't place one of her pups with a family with children under 12 years old. She had a puppy that was placed with a family with a small child and she felt good about this family but the dog was dropped twice breaking two legs. So she had good reasons to feel the way she did. I have also seen a lot of small breeds come into rescue because of children and maybe others involved in rescue will see it the same way. But you should use their information to make sure things go smoothly and the best for all family members involved. Each family and each situation is different but we naturally want to protect these little Neezers tha we adore.

I have a friend who is involved in Sheltie rescue and they have a set rule with a fenced in yard. She came across someone she really thought was perfect for a dog but they were on a golf course and had hoa rules against fences. The family had always had a sheltie and they walked the dog several times a day so sometimes each situation needs to be taken into consideration.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thinking of adding a Neezer, check out this thread!

Banchy - it sounds like the people giving you some comments probably have the best interests of everyone in your family, and the dog at heart. Explaining the research you have done, the quality of your breeder, and all about the wonderfulness of the Havanese for your family will show them how thoughtful you have been in the process. Some people feel very strongly about saving dogs from rescue, with good reason. But it sounds like that is not the best option for your young family with allergies. It seems like you have a great case. Just print off some of the incredible pictures from the puppy threads here and show them to your family. Then they'll know it is the best move to get a hav!
