How Much Exercise?

OK, I'm just curious here. Stella is one year old and we briskly walk one mile at least once a day but almost always twice a day. Is this enough excercise for her? How much does your dog get?

That's plenty and probably more than most get. Ours that live here get unlimited exercise on their own and Pam takes turns with them walking from the house to the highway and back which is a mile one way most days.

Our first stud dog, now retired and eleven years old, lives with friends on the lake now. They are very active and walk three miles a day. Trip walks that with them and more.

Thanks, Tom. I'm always wondering if I'm doing all I need to to keep my little girl healthy

Not sure about miles, but my guys get anywhere from 1-2 hours of excercise a day. But I think I'm on the high end. My guys go to the park everyday afte work for about 1hr where they run off leash. 30min in the morning, and about another 30min in the evening.

We have over 1/2 an acre fenced for RLH's and I give Sully at least one about 2 mile walk a day. Then there is time he plays with Logan they run around like mad all the time.

Lola goes for hikes for about 2 hours daily with 4 other dogs. RLH, jump in the ocean, romp like crazy. Then she sleeps the rest of the day and night away, with a few marathon sessions of in house catch, fetch and RLH. But I would say she sleeps about 19 hours a day.

I think the signs of not enough exercise would be destructive behavior around the house, not following commands, etc.

I take our dogs out every 4 hours for 30-minutes of play time. Strangely, Pepper isn't overly active during this time. He does have days where he plays RLH with April or Magnum, but most days he prefers to sit in the shade and watch the retrievers play.

Indoors he likes to RLH and go crazy - but outside he's a mellow guy. We took him walking with us on a local trail and he pooped out before we made the 1-mile mark. I had to carry him the rest of the way! I was hoping he'd be a trail dog with me this summer, but I can see that I'll need an all-terrain stroller if I want him to come along.

If Stella seems content, then I'd say she's doing fine with what you're giving her.

I think dogs are going to vary and if they like the type of exercise you are doing. Belle and Dora are completely different. Dora loves to play with toys and loves to chase. Belle on the otherhand LOVES walks and running. Dora likes to walk but wants to go more for the smells and being outdoors. Belle knows she has energy and needs to get rid of it.

Recently, My husband has been trying to get me to go running with him so I decided to help motivate me to take Isabelle. Well I got Isabelle ready, Dora was jumping up and down. I felt bad and decided to put the splitter and take her. Well Dora's idea of a good time, does not include running on a mountain side. It ended up me with Belle pulling as hard as she can (if only she was a mastiff I wouldn't have to run!) and DH jogging carrying Dora! Bet the neighbors loved that! I am thinking Dasher will eventually be like Belle as he loves when I get hyper but we have to concentrate on puppy training and not showing him running and pulling on the leash is fun for now!

Some days, we dont' even walk Ricky and Sammy. I'd LIKE to, but life gets busy, and I get sore and pretty tired. I have back, leg, shoulder problems and so it can be tough some times getting myself out the door. I do try and take 20-30 min. walks 4 or 5 times/week and they RLH in our back yard every day, as well as in the house with our many stairs, over 4 levels.

I feel guilty most days because I know they'd like more, esp. Ricky, but I just can't do it and with 3 teens here, it's not like they actually volunteer! Hubby works very late every day. They aren't overweight at all, but I know it would keep them stimulated to get out more often.

Cash could play and chase a ball for hours...but he just puts up with his walks moping behind us. Jasper on the other hand barely moves in the house or in the yard, but if you say "Walk" or pull out the leash he looks like a puppy and gets excited. DH gives them both about 1.5-2 mile walk almost every morning-- He says Jasper could keep going and going but Cash is pooped. But then Cash tries to get Jasper to play and Jasper won't budge. So good Alpha's that we are---WE play ball with Cash to burn off energy. And take Jasper on extra walks when we can. Didn't we get two so they could tire each other out and not us? LOL
