HRI: Fostering & Available Dogs

Here is an urgent plea from the Director of Havanese Rescue Incorporated. I thought I'd share as I know that many of you forum members have become new fosters and some are thinking about it.

Linda

President's Message

Dear Friends of Havanese Rescue,

This letter is a plea - a very real and genuine one. We desperately need your help in our foster care program. We continue to receive dogs in unprecedented numbers.

Very soon we will be at a terrible place in the history of our organization - a place that brings more dread than I can express. We will have to turn away needy Havanese, any needy Havanese - whether an owner-turn-in, one rescued from a mill or one reported in a shelter. When there is nowhere to place a dog there is nothing we can do.

This past month has been a busier one than ever and we once again saw our foster families rise to the challenge. But that help came at a cost. We are almost completely out of foster homes. Over this past weekend alone we were asked to take an additional five dogs. While these dogs have been accepted into HRI, we haven't yet placed them in their foster homes. That is going to take work - lots of it - to find enough places for these five. And then there will be next week and beyond.

Foster parents are our heart. Without them we simply CANNOT exist!

Please look into your hearts and homes. See if you can find some room for a little dog. Having done this job many times, I can attest to the happiness that comes from taking in a needy dog, giving comfort, love, better health, and a chance for a better forever life. You can actually see their gratefulness, the new bounce in their step, and the "smiles" on their faces. For your reward you receive bushels of love, countless doggie kisses, and the very pure joy that comes from having helped a helpless soul.

Keeping a hopeful heart,
Stacy DeJoseph

P.S. To register as a foster home, please visit http://volunteers.havaneserescue.com or indicate your willingness to foster by checking the appropriate box on the adoption application.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

check out cute Little Einstein!

Einstein is a peanut-sized pup with a lot of personality.

At only seven pounds, Einstein is one of the "flying Havanese" able to leap high onto the arm and back of sofa. If you happen to sit down on that sofa, he's happy to settle himself around your neck to sleep. Einstein also loves to "fly" around the backyard, chasing his Havanese foster brother.

Einstein came to HRI after he was left at animal control after his human mom died. He's very shy with men, though this is improving. Einstein is rather hand-shy and is watchful of feet. He loves attention and thinks a lap is the perfect place to fall asleep and will snuggle in quite close.
Einstein lists his favorite hobbies as - ear rubs, lap time snoozes, dog treats, playing with his Havanese brother, chasing cats and digging holes in the garden. Attempts to convince him that cats are not for chasing have been unsuccessful. In his forever home, it is best if a cat doesn't have to put up with Einstein's love of the chase. Preferred placement for Einstein would be in an adult home with a single woman, or one with a gentle and patient man who's willing to give Einstein time to adjust might work out also.

Einstein is being fostered in southeastern WI. It would be preferable for his adoptive family to meet him prior to placement, particularly if there is an adoptive dad involved.

As the number of rescued Havanese continues to increase weekly, HRI is in need of foster homes. If you can help, please register at our volunteer web site: http:volunteers.havaneserescue.com

Meet adorable Tucker!

And here's Tucker - a 2 year old little powerhouse at about 10 pounds!

Tucker is affectionate, loving to snuggle up on the lap of his foster mom. He is very good at potty training though an adoptive family should expect a transition period.

Tucker feels like a new dog now that he's had his foster home experience. He'd been an only dog in the past, but his sparkling personality has come through now and he loves playing with his five other house-pals.

Tucker would do well in a very patient home with people who are kind but understand dog dynamics. He needs to remember he's not the one in charge. Tucker would do well with an adult family or children with older teenagers. He would do best where there is at least one other small dog.

He is currently being fostered in CT.

Meet Princess Bella? Do you have the love to share?

Our sweet Bela is a big girl with a big heart, and a yearning for a soft lap and fluffy pillows. She loves popcorn, treats, and most of all having a special person to love. She's a laid back little princess who loves to lie next to her people on the couch or bed. Bela loves pampering, and will make a wonderful companion for her forever person or family. She is healthy and happy and loves being in the center of things. She has beautiful golden eyes, which don't photograph well, and her current haircut will grow out into a real Havanese look.

Bela needs a home where someone is home most of the time, because she is happiest next to her people. Other dogs, cats, and older or just visiting children would be okay. She would be fine with visiting grandchildren on occasion. Bela will need a home where her people let her sleep in their bed and sit on their furniture, and treat her like the sweet princess she is.

Bela has a history of accidents in the house, but there have been none in her foster home. She is well mannered, and ready to go to her furever home where she needs and expects to be part of the family. If you have a lap, and love and snuggles for princess Bela, she will reward you with her love and adoration.

Bela is 6 years old and is fostered in Idaho.

How about this cutie pie? Journey

Journey, at little more than a year old, loves to play! As much as he loves running and wrestling with his foster siblings though, this guy loves to sit on your lap as long as you remember your "job" is to pet him and tell him what a great dog he is. Journey is curious about the world and is happy to keep himself busy exploring. He is very well behaved.
Journey walks well on a leash. He is basically housetrained though he will need consistency when he makes his transition to his forever home. That home must have another dog for him to play with unless he's adopted with Cody, the dog with whom he came to HRI.

Journey is currently fostered in IL but will soon be moving to foster care in Indiana.

Meet Journey's buddy Cody

Sweet Cody

Cody is a little more than a year old. This sweet boy and downright adorable dog appreciates human attention. He gets a little shy when you go to pick him up, but is happy to have cuddles from people.
Cody loves his time with other dogs. It will be very important that he have a forever home with another dog or with Journey, the dog he came with to HRI.

Cody is house trained, well behaved and walks well on a leash. What more could anyone want? A very lucky family will be delighted to have him as a family member.

Cody is currently fostered in IL but will be moving to a foster family in Indiana.

Meet Sweet Sampson

The first thing you notice about Sampson is his adorable face. How could anyone walk away from that bright little face? That's what happened though. This nine month old came to HRI from a shelter where he was left after not being house trained. Sampson is working on that now. (Someone must have forgotten to tell his first family that Havanese can sometimes take a long time to house train.)

Originally rather shy, Sampson has warmed up nicely to his foster family. He loves to give gentle kisses. Curling up next to his foster mom while she's busy makes him very happy.

At only 9.5 pounds, Sampson is a little guy. That doesn't stop him from tackling dried leaves he found hiding behind the outside door. Sampson likes to pull one from the small pile and run with it into the yard where he jubilently shreds it. He's such a helper!

Linda, I would love to foster, but I live so far away!!! I've already contacted Hav rescue in Canada, but there are almost never any Havs that end up there. I suppose that's a good thing. If there was a way I could help HRI by fostering any of their dear rescued pups, I would.

What beautiful pictures! Samson's face reminds me of Tritia's Brodie!!
