maybe a dumb question...

...but, why do small mixed breed pups cost so much?

i have been checking out mixed breed pups as an alternative to a purebred and the prices seem way too high for some of them.

just wondering.

Not sure except that these days they are known as "designer" dogs! The stranger the combo the better (for some)!

Just a group of people thinking that they can make money breeding dogs - WRONG! Check the health testing - it's horrible. Most of what I've read says that you end up picking up the worst of both breeds. I know you've had a heck of a time with Havanese rescue, but perhaps some other rescue groups in your area might have something you'd be interested in bringing home as a buddy for Mugsy.

It's all a marketing scheme, Joe. Pure and simple. The reason most breeders of mixed toy breeds will give, is that you will get the 'best of both breeds', but as Lisa points us, that is just plain wrong. How on earth can anyone guarantee that???

Basically, a 'designer dog' is a mutt. Nothing more, nothing less. Nothing wrong with that at all, but dont' try and sell one to me for $2000!!!

I remember the days when you could go to the mall and find someone with a box full of "designer dogs" trying to give them away.

A freind of ours got goldiepoo (goldenretriever and poodle mix). Fortunately he has a good temperament but his size is HUGE, he looks like a little pony! When they take him for an outing, it's in their Hummer!

I think it's something like this.....
Someone wanted a purebred poodle -- and a purebred yorkie -- then they let them breed and want to sell you their babies as "designer dogs". I agree will all above and I think Marj explained it very well.

It is the designer craze that is causing this. Think of the most popular dogs to sell and their reasons to not sell. It is very easy to erase those reasons with a desiner breed--and we all love those special breeds.

I bet if you watch Joe,and just be patient(I know it's hard)but the right dog is out there for you. Either a hav or another rescue dog. I don't think the rescue's think of them as "designer dogs"---only the person selling and buying can say that(wink).Bottom line they are mutts, and mutts can turn out to be great dogs--but getting one from a rescue will benefit you and the rescue organization, and most important---save the life of a dog...and the best part? You're not spending a huge sum of money on a mutt dog and giving the breeder a reason to breed again. No profit-No puppies.
