MHS strikes again!

Hi everyone, after our two playdates this weekend I am having severe pangs of MHS!!! Bruno has been trying to convince me pretty much since we got Mijo to get a second but up until now I have been in heaven with my one and only. After talking to all the multiple owners this weekend I see so many benefits to the dogs (not my bank account) of having two! In my plans, I thought we would get a second later on, maybe next summer.

I know that I can get honest advice from all of you so I'd like your opinion on this one...

I am off work for the summer which is a definite plus. However, we have a trip to Europe coming up in August for 3 weeks. During that time Mijo will stay with my parents (who always take amazing care of him) and my sister in law (who Mijo adores!) will also be stopping by several times a week to spend time with him. If we get a new puppy now it would be good because I'd have over a month to train him and spend 24/7 with him. But then when we leave it would be 3 weeks of possible regression and who knows what else. Keep in mind that the hav we're looking at getting is 4 months old (the breeder was thinking of keeping him to show/breed but decided to keep his brother due to his colouring.)

Anyone else get their hav from Bill Burns of Burns Gardens? I love what I know so far (health testing is upfront and online, contract online, Billy is ADORABLE!) but the only thing I find strange is why he would stipulate in the contract that the puppy cannot be neutered until the age of 18 months? I see a lot of marking in my future if that is the case! I have to ask about that!

Anyways, all advice is welcome and appreciated.

I would caution against it- I know I know, who would have ever thought I would say that just because a 3 week change with a puppy is a lot of time. I am even freaking out moving Dasher and he will have been with me over 2 months but his entire household is going to change. I am really working on lots of socialization and going places in the meantime. But I honestly think puppies do the best with stability. Just one perspective though

Thinking of adding a Neezer, check out this thread!

I'd say go for it! Although, I have to wonder why they want you to wait 18months to fix a 'pet' hav??? I read the contract and I don't get it?? Did you look at any of the breeders in Ontario that migth have pups avaliable?

The only way I would do it is if you can guarantee that your family will keep him on the same schedule you set up and set the same rules for him. Otherwise, everything you did for that month will be gone. Take it from me, I know.

Hey Connie,

While it's true a lot can change during those 3 weeks it's not like your parents won't be doing any training I'm guessing. If you can spend that much time during the summer it would really be of benefit. Although I'm guessing you will be on vacation constantly thinking of little Billy, wondering how he's doing.

Have you thought about another breeder? I think Terri Bergan has one available, well according to her website. Sounds like it could be outdated though. Billing definitely looks adorable.

Here's a list of breeders in Ontario. Just scroll down to Ontario.

Hi Connie - would it be possible for Bill to puppy sit for you while you are away? Many breeders to this and it might be a better solution than to send him to your parents. Three weeks is a long time for you to be gone but if he went home for a "vacation" too, that might work out perfectly.

I suppose it should be said that I'm a pushover for these adorable babies. I would take that incredible little boy in a New York minute. When is the perfect time to get a puppy? There's often something going on in our lives or something unexpected that comes up. I think having the time to spend with him before your trip would be beneficial for both of you. However, I'm a big believer in that pit of your stomach feeling that tells you what's right for you in any given set of circumstances.

Whatever you decide, I wish you much luck with it.

I already want another one but my DH freaked when I mentioned it! We're planning on new carpet and new family room furniture next year so that's why we got Scooter now. I know that once we do the new things in the house I won't want a puppy so I've got almost a year to convince him! I just thought he'd always have someone around, even though they wouldn't be human.

Okay so as mentioned in the photo challenge forum we're getting another puppy! We're so thrilled and can't wait to get him in two weeks. Its from the same breeder as mentioned above but we decided not to get Billy because we just didn't feel right leaving my parents with two dogs and for Billy to have to get used to so many houses in such a short period of time would not have been right either.

My DH is in Switzerland for work training for a few more weeks but the day after he comes back we're picking up our pup from another breeder who was nice enough to pick up our little guy when she picked up hers! I can't wait! He's the biggest boy of the group and according to the breeder, a real LOVE dog! That's fantastic because he will fit perfectly with Mijo who is already such a loving boy!

On top of all of this (and most importantly) DH and I are having a baby!!! We just found out we're expecting a daughter in March. Although the non-pet owners in our lives think we're nuts to get another Hav right now, everyone else seems to think it will be a wonderful addition --the two boys can entertain themselves when I'm busy with baby... and having the year off for mat leave will also be a great time for me to spend with all of my babies (two and four-legged!)

Just wanted to take a sec and share all of our wonderful news!

Now I'm off to bathe Mijo and try to keep busy... am I crazy for missing DH this much?!
