The big snip...

Those of you with male furbabies.... When did you get him neutered?

My vet wants to wait til Riley is 6 months but I am worried about the way he's been acting lately. He's tried to pee on a lady's pant leg in the dog park and he's been doing a LOT of humping. I know this might not change but I sure know it won't get better. He'll be 18 weeks old this friday.

Thoughts???

I would wait until 6 months. Any earlier is unnecessary and can pose a risk. I know not everyone agrees that's true, but I wouldn't do it too early. If you're that worried about his behavior, then make sure to let him know that you don't agree with what he's doing and that it's not okay. Does he only hump other dogs or does he do it to you and other humans?

Wait until 6 months. Definetly dont let him pee/hump if you can prevent it.. however, boys will be boys. Tito has peed on my 2x now, both times at shows!! Not at the dog park, at home, but at the dog show.... not amusing. I yelled at him big time at the behavior has not happened again (fingers crossed).

You don't need to be in a rush - just tell him "NO" whenever he exhibits that behavior. Toy dogs can wait longer than six months to be neutered - so the longer you wait the better.

Thanks....I guess I should just be more vigilant. I my vet was concerned about his teeth and not wanting to put him out twice if he had issues with his molars and needing baby teeth extracted.

Max was neutered at 6 months. Also you want to wait until his baby
teeth come out. It was good seeing you today at the park.

It was such fun at the park! I loved seeing you and Max and Bessie. I am so glad Laura clued me into the group! I wished I'd had a picture of her with all the Havs piled on her.

Doc was 6 months.....we just told him no anytime he exihibited those behaviors and he'd stop. We never had much of a problem with it.

I agree! We were told in puppy class to say no to humping to let them knkow it's not appropriate play. It worked! Rufus only has one item he feels humpy about and it isn't a person or an every day deal...so no big problem! Males and females both can get humping and both can mark. It's not solved by neutering. It's solved by training.

another opinion

Chico was neutered at 3 months. My dh's schnoodle was also neutered earlier
than 6 months. Neither dog had any adverse reactions. They are both thriving and are healthy dogs.
Also, the rescue groups often neuter puppies earlier than 6 months.
We had Cali spayed at 6 months upon the advice of the vet.
