Unhappy Wandering sweet dog

We have a dog wandering in the street everyday. The dog is owned by family one house over from my next door neighbor. The dog wandersi nto our yard, hangs out on the street. Our street is a cut through, winding road and the people quite often speed.

The first time we came to look at the house, we found the same dog on the street and was about to be hit by another car. Our realtor who is a major dog lover and whose daughter works in the dog rescue, got the dog in our car. Dog was clean and well fed. He immediately took to my DH. From the tag we located the house and when the realtor approached the owner, the woman actually started to verbally abuse the realtor for bringing the dog in. The dog refused to go with the owner and clung to my DH. She pulled the dog out of the SUV roughly and dog moaned and cried. She continued to verabally abuse the realtor and all the drivers that drove on the street. We were completely shocked and speechless. The dog is very sweet and not at all agressive. Today dog followed me home from our gate, but Lizzie was not very happy, while Benji wanted to be friends with him. The dog was gentle with both of them but I am not sure how to handle this situation. I definitely don't want to deal with the owner after having seen what kind of person she is.

Our phone service was being installed while the dog followed me and the technician (another dog lover) took the dog over to the owner and the owner's son told him that let the dog be and that the dog always wanders around. Obviously they don't care. The technician was shocked to see their reponse.

I am always terrified that the sweet dog will be hit sometime by the vehicles. I am not sure what I should do. The owners don't seem nice at all. Thank god that they aren't my neighbors.

Best, Poornima

Find the dog another home. They won't miss him and he will be loved which he wants and needs.

Call the local Humane Society. Maybe they'll have more clout in dealing with the owners (who hopefully will lose the dog and receive a hefty fine)

Poornima~ Have you checked to see what the local ordinances/laws are regarding keeping dogs fenced/leashed?

Poornima,

I would call animal control or one of the local shelters and ask what can be done for this poor dog before it gets killed. I pray it will make it but with owners like that, it's no wonder the dog wants to follow you home. It's heartbreaking the way some people treat their animals. Some people simply shouldn't be caretakers of pets or children.

There, I'm off my soapbox now, but it gets me so mad.

Poornima - if you're really brave, you can contact rescue and find that dog another home. It's awful to have to watch that kind of abuse. Hopefully the humane society or a shelter can give you some tips too. That's just so heartbreaking. Sounds like maybe a new addition to go with your new home might be in order. LOL

Poornima-
I would call animal control. We have a leash law in our county but our Homeowner's Assoc. also has rules about keeping your pets on your property. Several families let their animals wander, very frustrating, but I haven't ever called the county on anyone. If it was a busy road I'd call though! You're very sweet to care so much about this poor dog, I feel badly for him as he's obviously being neglected, at best, and probably mistreated as well.
Good luck to you!

To be honest with you, I am so swamped at present with our move, I haven't ventured out except to get some groceries. But I will check with our realtor if she knows anything about the local ordinances / fence/ leash laws. We are completely new to the area and except for a couple of colleagues of my DH and our realtor, we don't know anyone. The houses are far apart and only the next door neigbors seem to know each other.

However, I checked the dog for any abuse and he seems healthy, has no fleas that I can see, has a tag and also is clean, doesn't smell. I will keep you posted.

Best, Poornima

Lisa, I would have taken him in, if I could. But it is just not possible. He is so sweet and gentle. Looks like a poodle mix. I am going to keep an eye on him and hopefully I will learn more about the ordinances. Perhaps my next door neighbor might shed some light on the situation.
