Gryff is getting so much better with other dogs

I mentioned in another post that we have new neighbors with a black lab. It only took Gryff a minute or two to completely acclimate to her. They were running all over the yard in no time at all.

This morning, I took Gryff for a walk and my other neighbors with their Akita were outside. Lucy, the insane Weimeraner and another lab were all in the yard. I brought Gryff over and he instantly went on his back and let the other dogs check him out. We didn't stay long enough for him to get up and play, but the fact that he didn't freak out and was very calm was quite heartening -- especially considering these were three very big dogs.

He also had a very raucous play session with my husband this morning without constantly running back or looking toward me for encouragement. They just had a great time.

He has also been more tolerant of Alec, although there is still the occasional growl. He hasn't gone to Alec for playtime, but he will play if Alec initiates.

I do have a question. Gryff is very mouthy when he plays. He never intentionally bites, but I don't quite know how to curb it. I tell him "no bite" and I will stop playing with him if it gets too rough. Any thoughts?

That's great that he's doing so much better! Didn't you recently go out of town and leave him with a family with other dogs?

Did Gryff ever go to Puppy Kindergarten? Playing with other dogs is a great way for him to learn to control his "bite". Havanese like to play with their mouths but if he's being overly rough other dogs will let him know! They can be a great help to teach him to be a little softer with his teeth.

Gryff didn't go to puppy kindergarten, but he did 15 weeks of training. Yes, we were just out of town and he stayed with my friend and her Rottwieller. He and Nala get on just fine. I hope we are able to go to Laurie's playdate in August. I would like to see if he is any different than last time.

I think they communicate a lot with their mouth. Showing teeth as a warning sign- mine do that with bones, etc. If someone gets a little too mouthy (usually Dash with his puppy teeth) there is usually a loud yelp and then a correction(Dora will hold Dash down if he gets too out of control, Belle nips at him) . I almost always let them communicate and figure things out. I only step if I think one of them is acting in a way I don't find is okay (Belle likes to pick on submissive dogs).

Maybe if you don't have havs in your area you can do small playdates with a few small dogs? Also great to socialize with big dogs if they are well socialized.

That is such great news, Ivy! I am happy to hear that Gryff is more playful and enjoying the whole family, not just you. That's a good thing.
