Question Owners of male dogs - a question about going #1

Hi everyone! Just wondering if anyone had any advice for me on how to get Mijo to empty his bladder when he's in the yard.

Since Mijo was a pup we've had a litter box for him inside and take him out for two walks a day. Lately, since he's had the crystals issue we (mostly I) have been walking him four or five times a day. He will use the litterbox when he absolutely needs to but waits for walks if he can. When I take him out to the yard he will pee once but he won't empty his bladder. I need to walk him for him to completely empty his bladder. I always thought he was emptying out in the litter box but upon further thinking, this is probably why he got the crystals in the first place.

I am off from work for the summer so walking him often isn't a big problem now but I can't see myself going on four or five twenty minute walks for him to pee on the usual trees and blades of grass during the winter months!

Does anyone have any advice on how to get him to pee in the yard? He will go one or two extra times when his friend Coco comes to visit but even then he's too busy playing to worry about going #1!

HeLP! PLeaSe! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Connie

Maybe try the potty training spray that encourages them to go? We used it with Scooter just to reinforce going outside and always sprayed it in the same area. If he has his own "spot" to go maybe he'll go more often. Good luck!

It sounds like Mijo has gotten in the habit of holding urine to "mark" with. And your yard is not that fun to mark--no good scents.

I am not sure I have any advice. Your dog is making a choice and I do not know if there is a way to have him make a different choice. My first inclination would be to not walk him unless he has voided sufficient urine and then when you do walk do not pause at the marking places.

Lets defer to the experts on this one!

Cheryl, I'm thinking the same as you. Do NOT let him mark anywhere on his walk at all! First take him out to pee, then a brisk walk with no stopping! If it's a longer walk stop at a grassy area and you get to choose the pee spot, not him. Once he learns that he won't be getting to mark, maybe he will start to empty his bladder at home. After all, it's not fun to walk with a full bladder!

If he won't stop to pee when he has a friend over, let friend stay in the house and take Mijo out to his spot to pee and he doesn't get to play until after he has peed.

Kodi will mark when we go for walks, but when it's time to go pee in the yard, that's what he does. I think because when we got him, we would put him in the yard and tell him "go pee", and he did.

Another dog...

If you bring another male dog and have them pee in your yard, he will want to cover it. You can also put somethings that look like fire hydrants. Riki likes to pee on the side of planters too.

Another dog always works.

No advice from me and I have two boys. Bogart will hold his pee all day and when I take him out he takes one long pee. Brando on the other hand will do a short one and save the rest for marking. Bogart is very submissive whereas Brando is not. It may have something to do with that. It's not a big deal as I always take them for a 30min walk in the morning before work since they will be waiting 10hrs till I get home. I do have a pad for Brando to use, sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't. Bogart will simply not pee on a pad or in the house.

Benji holds it to mark too. I agree with Christy's suggestion. However, if you are the only one walking him, it would work. My DH walks Benji and Lizzie in the morning and didn't stick to the rule of not letting Benji mark.

Wow, thanks for the great advice. I never thought of walking him without stopping. Sounds like a plan. I worry about the first few days (or weeks!) if he doesn't get it and holds it.... with the crystals problems he's having I don't want them to become stones. However, I know that we can stick to just walking for the sake of walking and my DH will be able to stick to that plan for sure. He's the more strict of the two of us, and if it helps to train him properly, I'm sure he'll be all for it! What I'm thinking of doing is setting up a special area with peastone gravel (named intentionally???) so that he knows that its HIS area and so he doesn't roam the entire backyard as he normally does. We'll let you know how he does! Today is the final day for marking walks! Tomorrow begins the fun! Thanks for your advice everyone!
