ice cube on a hot day?

on a hot day, like today, i have, in the past, given my dogs (and now mugsy) an ice cube to help cool them down.

mugsy mostly rolls around on it and gives it the occasional chew and licks it too.
other dogs (bigger dogs) have sat with it like it was a chew toy.

i have read that it's a bad idea as it's the same as giving a dog a rock to chew on but i don't see it that way.

anyone else do this or am i the only one?

joe

Mini Aussie & ice cubes!

Joe - My daughter has an American Eskimo, a Mini Aussie and a Havanese. The Mini Aussie is JUST tall enough to hit the ice dispenser in the door of the refrigerator. Ice cubes are his favorite treat. Of course, his teeth are a lot stronger her Havanese puppy's! Don't know if its good or bad, but I think all dogs like ice cubes. I put a few chips in Daisy's water bowl and she "dug" them out - spilling all her water. But had FUN!

Lola LOVES crushed ice. Whenever I fill a glass she runs over to the fridge and slams herself up against the doors waiting for her ice. I drop several on the floor and she will grab them, one at a time and take them into the living room to chew on the rug. I don't think the chips are a problem, they are pretty soft.

Riki loves crushed ice...

Something else to spread around rather than toilet paper rolls.

I didn't just get havanese, I got a lifestyle!

My girls really like licking ice cubes. They don't chew them, just lick them. Sedona LOVES to dig them out of the water dish and soak her whole face. Her next favorite thing is to jump up on the nearest person who's wearing shorts and plop her very cold, wet face on bare legs.

Roxie doesn't chew her ice cubes... she tosses them in the air and chases them as they hit the ground and slide around... over and over and over, until they go under the couch or chair or down the air vent.....

We thought about making a movie of Guapo with the ice cube...it's hilarious! I've heard something about it freezing their little stomachs, but it cools him off and he spends more time chasing it and batting it around than chewing on it. I'd be interested to hear if anyone has any real evidence of it being bad for them??

Braedyn, Jordyn, Paige and Mouse get a bowl full of ice cubes every single day!
Braedyn loves to dig them out of the bowl, Mouse loves to dunk her entire face in! They love to carry them around and lick them. I don't think they actually chew them though~ I figure since it's close to 100 most days here, it really helps cool them off!

Michelle, it is more of a problem in dogs that have barrell chests (think Dobermans), but yes, ice cold water or chilling their stomachs (internally, not externally) when they are overheated, can cause bloat. Bloat is fatal if not caught right away.

I remember a dog dying last year due to bloat (ice cubes in the water bowl outside on a hot day at a dog show) and I'm pretty sure it was a Havanese, which is uncommon.
