It's been over 12 hours and Milo is still holding it!!

Milo refuses to potty. It's been over 12 hours since he last went potty. He ate a big dinner and drank plenty of water. We been taking turns waking up every hour to try and get him to go. Is there any harm to the puppy for holding it this long? We both know he's dying to go, but for some reason he's scared to. We are trying to crate train him and have him go inside on puppy pads. It's driving us crazy.

try a new potty location. if something has spooked him outside, he needs to go someplace else, how about a walk to get things going? 12 hours is a long time, maybe call the vet?

Wow, you might need to call the vet. My mom's friends little puppy didn't poop for a few days and she took it to the vet. She hadn't realized that his hair was stuck around his anus and he coudn't go......geez! She's older and just didn't notice what the problem was. He was impacted by then. As far as peeing, I don't know. He could have an infection or something, so don't mess around to long!

I would check with the vet too to rule out any health issue. He may be constipated or have obstruction.

Benji had held pooping and peeing for 17 hours due to rain when he was a puppy and we were absolutely sure that he had no health issues. He still hates rain. A couple of days ago when we had thunderstorms and pouring rain here, he didn't eat but drank water as usual and didn't pee for almost 9 hours. I was taking him on the leash in a covered patio every 4 hours and still he wouldn't go because he doesn't like to be out on wet days!!

I do hope Miko gets back to his normal schedule and has no health issues. Good luck!

Best, Poornima

Have you asked the breeder where Milo would go potty at their house? Maybe he thinks he has to do it only one way?
Oops, I forgot he was a rescue. Sorry

We don't bring him outside to potty because we want to train him to go inside on puppy pads. He finally pooped and peed this morning around 7am, but of course NOT on the pads. Instead, he went by the windows. He probably wanted to go outside. He's a puppy mill rescued dog, and the rescue org told us he was locked in a cage with other dogs all day and get to run in a narrow metal wire 'walk' once in awhile. So I think that's where he picked up the habit of holding it for a looong time till he can go outside to avoid soiling the cage. Miko has been very good so we are hoping Milo will follow his brother. But it has been really tough so far. He never wants to go when we put him on the pads, but we can totally tell he needs to. It's going to be many sleepless nights...

He does have giardia and yesterday was his last day of meds. He will be going to the vet today for another test and we will ask about his potty situation.

Is it possible to let him go outside? Then have the pads in the house for when you are gone - I know a few here do that.

How did you resolve Milo's "problem?" I have a similar situation. Thanks,

Sue

Sue, Milo is doing a lot better now. He goes regularly in the morning, afternoon, and evening (not always on the pads but he's getting there). What we did was just watch him very very carefully when he's out of his crate. The first few days, he was still adjusting to his new environment so he didn't know it was ok to go inside. After 12 hours or so, he really cant hold it so he would sniff around the windows and front door. When he did that, we just kept bringing him to the puppy pads. He accidented by the front door a few times. There was one time when he hasn't gone for way more than 12 hours so we gave in and took him outside. He went potty right away. When he's crated, he's in direct view of the puppy pads so he can see Miko (our other hav) go on it and see us rewarding Miko. I think that helped alot. Yesterday, he ran to the potty pads to see all by himself.

Do you also have a puppy that refuses to go inside?

My problem is a little different, since we have a big yard and Cazzie our Hav has been trained to go outside. Where our problem is similar is our new, 5 month old Coton, just holds it! Pee and poop, I can't get her to go! The vet said to tickle her tummy but that hasn't worked. I see her circling and sniffing, I put her outside. Nothing. She doesn't yet get a clue from Cazzie. At night at least, she has been whining and then DH puts her on the cement slab in front of the garage, which isn't ideal but is at least outside and she does OK. During the day, I keep her as confined as I mercifully can, but when she does go during the day, she seems to have chosen the wooden floor in the family room, always when I have my head turned the other way. She's fast when she does go!

I never had a puppy this old and I wonder how she formed her habits. The breeder said she was being let out and going on the grass. Not working here.
