Puppy afraid of storm...

Anybody have a doggie who is afraid of storms? For the first time the other night Scooter was terrified! We've had frequent thunder storms over the last month or so but the other night was particularly loud with lots of lightning and thunder. My DH had to get up because Scooter was really crying and shaking. He held him for a few minutes to calm him down and then when he felt him relaxing he put him back into his crate. He whimpered off and on for several hours while the storm was going on. While we don't want to make him more anxious about storms we also wanted to reassure and calm him. We didn't get up with him again but when he would cry out we'd calmly tell him he was ok and he finally went back to sleep. Did we do the right thing???

I was really surprised that mine aren't afraid of storms. Shelby seems to be a little nervous before a storm hits, but the thunder didn't seem to bother them.
My German Shep used to try to hide under my bed, and my lab/husky would hide in the bathtub.

They must have been preparing for tornadoes!

Brady is terrified of storms. He neve used to be until one day he was outside with my DH and there was a huge crash of thunder suddenly and a bolt of lightening. My DH hit the ground and the neighbors kids who were with him screamed. Since then, he is terrified. I have to admit that I don't follow the rules about them. Brady will sit on my lap during a storm and I just pet him. He sleeps in our bed and will come and lay shaking on my head if it is storming. Again, I just let him.

Lilly doesn't seem to be afraid of them but she does normally sleep under the bed so if the are at night I do not notice anything different. During the day we are normally at home and she can see one of us. Now my other two are a different story. My golden retriever mix barks his head off and my german shepherd hides in the basement go figure, the bigger they are the more afraid they are around here.

Lexi is very afraid of storms! The second she hears thunder, or anything she "thinks" is thunder, she is under my feet, right next to me. I know you are not supposed to coddle them but it is really hard to not hug her when she is so scared!!

Isabelle is my weatherbug. She starts shaking about an hour before a storm comes thru. She can get out of control unfortunately. We were driving the other day thru a bad storm and belle went nuts. She started biting the crate and trying to get out. She just wants to hide in my lap. I ended up having to give her a lot of rescue remedy to get her to just lay down. I have tried everything but she is how she is. I just try to give her the RR before she needs it. My others could care less! So I am open to trying anything as this is the only fear in belle's world!

Cagney is very frightened of storms. The only thing I can do to comfort her is take her in the bedroom, close the blinds totally and put the television on loud. I put my arms around her and she usually will fall asleep (me too much of the time).

Years ago my dog Lucky was the most frightened one of all. A big german shephard/husky mix, he would shake so badly that I would always throw a big bath towel or a blanket over him, pet him and whisper that everything would be alright as we sat in the windowless bathroom with the door closed. It's hard to see them so frightened.

Yes, you did fine. We have three that are afraid of storms including Twinkle who is eleven years old and it hasn't affected her health at all. They just need for you to be strong and calm. That's the best you can do for them. Our three come and get in the chair with me as soon as they hear a distant rumble. They have their standard places including one behind my back and even though they tremble they seem to be satisfied touching me.

I don't think there's anything that you can do to make it easier for them. They do seem to learn that it's not going to last forever and learn to deal with it.

My theory is that these dogs hear a bit differently than the others.

I can't imagine not comforting anyone or anydoggie that is afraid or upset. We went on instinct during the storm and I'd do it again. Hopefully he won't react like that every time. We're in such a drought here in North Georgia that I don't dare complain about rain!
