Has anyone given their dog a valium?

Our vet suggested it for our trip, since Princess isn't a really good car rider.

Has anyone given their dog a valium before? What could I expect from it?

We considered boarding her, and there is a good boarding facility near here we've used before... but I think she would be miserable. She is used to being around us a lot.

The other option we have is to ask my Brother in law and his family to stay with us. (they lived here for a bit, so it shouldn't be a problem.. the kids love to come)
I'm just scared the kids wont be very gentle with her (although, they are pretty good.. but it took a LOT of watching) or she'll get loose, and run off. (my biggest fear)

Here we go again but you could try Bach flowers Rescue Remedy ..
Also there are homeopathic remedies that you could try before you resort to Valium . A vet here in the desert gave some to me for Asta the first time I flew with him and they worked very well and they worked really well // You just need to find a homeopathic vet . Maybe you can find one on line that has recommendations ..
I think there is another link about medicating dogs not with Valium but maybe you can find the thread ..
Goood Luck . I understand your concerns 100%. My son offered to take my Cosmo when I just had one dog but they have a toddler and I felt it was just too risky and too stressful for everyone involved ..

I had to give Sasha valium to travel in the care I hated giving it to her and would only do it if Marie Claire couldn't doggie sit for me and I had to take her she wouldn't be right the next day a bit drugged up and it also took a good few hours before she could pee...so not good. Fortunately Bellai is coping better hasn't pooed in her cage this last 2 journeys so here's hoping. Now my husband has gone back to the North Sea she has tried to be "the boss" so having to be firm with her, don't want her turning into a "crabbie" dog.

Cosmosmom~ I already give her rescue remedy.. and I have tried other natural alternatives. They only work for short trips.

I do not know if this helps but when I used the homeopathic pill he told me to give it in two doses . We were traveling from Palm Springs to SFO . I do not know how long your trip will be but maybe you could give more in water or under his tongue . From door to door the trip was about 5 hours ..
Maybe you should try the Benadryl first to see if it has any effect . If not then I guess Valium may be your only alternative . You do not want your dog to have major anxiety and stress this is not good either . It is better better to sedate him . You could give half a pill and if it does not work then give the other half .. I give pills in Salmon cream cheese and they take it no problem ..
I would ask around at various Vets or Emergency Care as I was amazed at what has become available in vet care the past 4-5 years ..

Jodi - I have given valium to both my girls on our longer trips. I have had no problems what-so-ever with it. I give it 2 hours before we are going to leave. They dont fall asleep, but are just mello. When we get to our destination they drink & explore & then just hang out. It certainly keeps Lily from having a heart attack. Logan will be going on Bonine as he is not upset in the car, he just has motion sickness & throws up.

Lauri, that picture is so adorable!
Does she do that often, or was it just a lucky shot? I'm so glad you didn't have a cigar and a draw of beer by her!
